View Full Version : Asian Men in Music
05-01-2005, 02:22 AM
I've decided to change the focus to Asian Men in Music. It will focus only on Asian men in the West who are part of the popular music scene - no Asian artists from Asia (boy/hair-bands), nor classical artists. That's not the message and awareness I'm trying to spread. So feel free to participate, and thanks in advance.

Since the late 90s, there are more and more incidences of AM being featured in music videos.
1. "Try Again" - Aaliyah.
Jet Li is prominently featured in this one.
2. "Southside" - Moby feat. Gwen Stefani.
There are a few frames of an AM model and a blonde WF french-kissing.
3. "Big Yellow Taxi" - Counting Crows
In this one, there is an AM/WF love-story featured prominently in one of the three sub-plots of the video. Two AM/WF couples. Nice tune too, a remake of a Joni Mitchell classic. :)
4. "Boy" - Mariah Carey
Feature Will Yun Lee and another very handsome model (Japanese) as two futuristic samurais who drive fancy SUVs and duke it out with kantana blades.
You can always download most of these using file-sharing softward like Limewire (www.limewire.com). Also feel free to contribute - let's make this a collection of information about AM/xF images in all music videos. ;)

Steve is Asian-American supermodel Devon Aoki's brother. He's a DJ in the L.A. area, and also the manager of an Indie Music Label that features quite a few Asian musicians. Check out his site www.dimmak.com.

The Von Bondies
Hailing from the Motor City (Detroit, Michigan), they bring their atomic garage rock energy to their songs - gritty and high-octane, but still melodic. The drummer is Don Blum, an Asian-American.

These guys are called From Monument to Masses.
The drummer-percussionist/programmer is Chinese-American, the bassist/programmer Filipino-American, and the guitarist Euro-American. These guys are *such* an interesting band that I have to recommend them to anyone who has a sophisticated ear for unusual but beautiful music. Their music is quite experimental, and sample/percussion-heavy. There are no real vocals, but everything comes together so beautifully as the end result. It consists entirely of Francis Chuong's complex percussion rhythms, and the wicked sampling by Sergio Robledo-Maderazo, as well as guitarist Matt Solberg's intricate stylings. Furthermore, they consider their music an instrument of social commentary - a sonic assult that will surely astound and impress you not only aurally but intellectually. A total winner of a band, in my book. If you're a Top-40 Hits person, forget about it.
In Hamburg, Germany. Dunno what they're doing with that surfboard in the background. Last I heard, there were no sightings of 15-footer waves in Hamburg harbor.

The two guys from Linkin Park. Snacky Chan is probably the best asian rapper out there. http://www.snackychan.com

And of course, the man who started all our Rock and Roll Dreams for us Asian-American boys. Founding member of the legendary Smashing Pumpkins, Japanese-American guitarist/songwriter James Iha. Here he is with bassist D'Arcy Wretzky and band leader Billy Corgan.
James was born James Yoshinobu Iha in Chicago, to second-generation Japanese-American parents. He met Billy Corgan and Darcy Wretzky while studying graphic design at Loyola-Marymount College in Chicago. The rest, as they say, is history. Like a lot of rocker Asian boys, I spent many an hour twanging away on my guitar to Smashing Pumpkins records, pretending to be James.
He's got that weird, brooding-androgynous thing that artsy girls just LOVE. So many girls I know have adored his long dark locks, and his matching enigmatic personality. He is close friends with Asian-American fashion designer Anna Sui and Vivienne Tam, and has modelled for them in the past (he's 5'11").
I'm usually not a fan of effeminate Asian brothers, but I make an exception with James because he pull it off well. He is the Asian-American David Bowie!

James has had his share of romances with famous women, but he seems to prefer the artistic types - he's dated bassist/bandmate D'Arcy Wretzky in the early 90s, and also runway model-cum-singer/songwriter Karen Elson.
