Thats the way it used to be. Calling an engagement off is effectively breach of contract for the girl's family. It used to be that the girl was stigmatised for the rest of her life afterwards and that no man would touch her with a ten foot pole. Usually the father would hunt the man down and either sue his ass off and force him to sign a humiliating document that the father would then show to the next woman the man engaged, or kill him.
