The Older I Get, The Less Fast Food I Eat

No, it's not movies like Supersize Me that made me start avoiding fast food places. I actually think my body is reacting badly to the typical fast food joints (even some of the Chinese take out places). I used to be able to eat everything from greasy burgers to fried chicken to colon-clogging pizzas, but for whatever reason, my body is craving more cleaner foods now - I actually have cravings for salads (sans dressing), something I never though I would be wanting to eat. I now drink tea instead of pop and coffee. Ice cream is no longer something I am interested in consuming. I have no appetite for cookies, whatsoever - in short, my sweet tooth is gone and the grease tooth is slowly decaying.

Has anyone else experienced a waning interest at eating a Burger King, etc. Even if I am starved, I'd rather find something else...like congee...

Yeah, I don't like fast food too much anymore. Of course, being a vegetarian, my options are somewhat limited, but I do definitely find myself preferring to go home and cook most of the time rather than stop off for a bean burrito or Burger King veggie burger. Of course, this is also kind to the bank account. I can make a whole meal from scratch for what I'd pay for a veggie burger, fries, and a drink at BK, and that stuff I cook for that is not only better for me, but it will feed me for three days because I cannot get the hang of cooking for one. (My kid doesn't eat adult food, and with the husband deployed, it's just me I'm cooking for...) Eat for three days for how much I could eat one meal for, and it's better for me, too, and probably tastes better to boot? Um, that's what I call a force multiplier right there!

Home Cooking >> Fast Food.

Plus, I don't want my kid to grow up thinking it's ok to live on greasy fast food veggie burgers and bean burritos from the drive through. If that's the example I set for her, then she's got much more chance of growing up to be obese than if she is most exposed to the fact that meals come from the kitchen at home, and they are usually cooked from scratch. It's more responsible to show her that example, and so I try.

Oh, but I don't like sweet or greasy things very much either. My sweet tooth went out of commission about four years ago. I stopped liking greasy stuff shortly after. I was only like 21 then, so I guess I got lucky on that!

He's worth it.

I hear ya, SoldierGirl. It's definitely cheaper (and healthier) to make stuff at home. Based on my cooking, whether it tastes the same or better than meals bought outside, I don't know. My only thing about cooking at home is that even though it is healthier, I don't attempt too many new recipes (since then I have to go hunt down the ingredients in the store and then measure everything, something for which I don't have much patience). So I do eat a fairly cycled menu.

With the fast food/sweet stuff, I find that I actually feel more sluggish and I get stomach aches and let's just say that it is not digested as satisfactorily as I would like. When I eat healthier (more steamed/baked stuff), I feel much more energetic and alert. Fries are the number one turn off for me. I do not know what it is - I am unable to eat fries anymore. Even the smell of them as they cook makes me want to pass out. The same goes for potato chips.

I also find that chocolate bars/candy have no draw anymore. Whenever we do manage to go out to a restaurant, I always end up with the complimentary mints and such that I shove in my pocket - they usually stay in there till I throw them out or they accidentally go through the wash.

I've also found that I've been moving away from red meats as a whole, and focussing more on fish. I recently barbecued these haddock shish-kabobs (chunks of haddock inbetween red and green peppers) - it was soooo delicious and healthy - I would probably put it on par with a juicy burger and / or Italian sausage, the way it tasted.

I've tried to do the veggie burgers on the BBQ, but they just all flake apart...I've actually never tasted a veggie burger in my life, and since I have heard mixed reviews, it's not on the high end of the list of things to try.

It's part of slowing down and enjoying life, I think.
I don't really eat fast food anymore either except for In-N-Out... and even that's not a frequent indulgence.
I don't try to avoid it, I just rarely want it.

Not changing, trying to live 'young' forever, is what ages you the most.

True.. it's weird and I'm actually becoming more and more health conscious, I try to avoid fried stuff (although it's my fav food) and soda/pop + sugar.

No seriously, I'm not an a-hole, talk to me

I can hardly wait to move out of this place, move to another one and get my own kitchen. I think the first thing I want to cook there is either fish sticks or little sausages, mashed potatoes and salad

I rarely go to McD's to eat, but I do like their chocolate sundae
Anyways, I rather eat discounted Korean/Chinese food that I get pretty fast, and it is more delicious than McDonald's food. I don't eat at all on BK as I don't like their food. I feel like vomiting (really) if I eat deep-fried food, so I haven't even tried KFC.

But eating home is inexpensive, can be delicious (Hehe, if I cook well) and I know EXACTLY what the food contains, so I would recommend home cooking for people who want to lose/gain weight, and thus they are able to ensure they get the food they need.

I still like some stuff, but overall, I eat way less than I use too. Probably has something to do with me not being able to lose it as easily as I use to.
I really lost my taste for burgers though. Sometimes I think I would rather go hungry than eat a hamburger from McD's. It's not just from watching those anti-fast food docs either, I just really don't like the taste of most fast food burgers anymore. And don't get me started on Taco Bell....I don't think that stuff is even meat.

Very true, Brisby.

I'm wondering whether any of us would put the fast-food Asian meals on that list of things that we'd rather not eat. At the local Chinese mall, most dishes can be had for $3.50 Cdn. + tax, and it even comes with a soup/soya milk. But while the dishes are very generous (it can feed myself, my wife and my son) and have lots of meats and carbs and some veggies, they are grease-laden, and the beef is like, "melt in your mouth". Not sure if beef should melt in your mouth, but maybe I'm assuming too much thinking it's beef. I have been slowly avoiding those places now, as much I prefer them over McDonald's and such (which is no longer a cheap place to eat anyway). Also, I have seen that some of the preparation and storage techniques are far from stellar. Another reason to make food from scratch at home.

Not really fast food, but one thing that over time, I like less and less are those Chef-Boy-R-Dee canned pasta things that a lot of people serve to kids. My Mom never served me these as a child, so I didn't eat these until I was well into my adult life. I was eating these, thinking, "it tastes like forms chunks of lard in tomato paste". I'm sure as a kid I would have thought differently, but it's amazing how our paletes and our bodies change over time.
