So here I am about to get my master's in computer science. I was at a career fair and was looking at the navy and airforce mostly with regards to their cs/it development area. I wanted to ask for anyone's opinion with regards to joining the military. I would be coming in as an officer, which grade, no clue, i looked it up but forgot.
You'd be a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force, Army, or Marines, and an Ensign in the Navy. That's paygrade O-1.
Anyhow, the military is not something I really recommend to people. While there are definitely good aspects to it, there is a lot of bullshit to wade through to get to that good stuff. The training is excellent, there are some good people, sometimes you'll get orders to be stationed somewhere cool (not often... and it never happened to me.) However, most of the time, the order of the day is taking orders from people who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, getting deployed a lot, and leaving behind any SO you may have (let's just say my deployments played a HUGE role in my two failed engagements), oh yeah, and war sucks a fat one.
OK, so you're looking at Navy and AF... I was Army... it's a bit different. In the Navy, you really won't see any combat. Your "deployments" will amount to sitting on a boat in the middle of the ocean for 6 months, and then coming back home. Oh, and you get paid a bunch of money for sitting out there on that boat just as if you were on an actual deployment where you were in danger. The Navy's a pretty sweet gig like that. Oh, and also, you have some role in deciding where you get stationed, and when you leave your current duty station, unlike the Army where you just get orders and if you don't like 'em, tough shit.
The AF is the cushiest branch of the Armed Forces. The rest of us call them Civilians in Camoflauge. Yeah, so that's the only downside. If you join the Air Force, everyone will give you endless shit for it. Otherwise, it's a pretty sweet gig. The chow isn't bad, when you get deployed, it's only for like 4 months, and the tents are air conditioned. You usually won't go to combat zones, either. Most of the AF people I know who are in the middle east are in Khazakstan, Kuwait, or Quatar. There are very few who actually go to Iraq or Afghanistan, whereas if you're Army or Marine Corps, you are guarenteed to go to at least one of those lovely places... Oh, and another thing to know about the AF is that if you get married while you're in and you decide to live on post, the post housing is FAR nicer than anything the Army ever dreamed of having. People with no kids even get a 3 BR house! How bout that shit?!
Yeah, so if you absolutely must join the military, go Air Force if you don't mind getting your boots sandy every now and again, although you won't be in any real danger, you will have actual deployments, which are not much fun even though they're really short. If you don't want to fuck with that, then join the Navy. You will never see a desert most likely, unless you are assigned to the Seabees (the Navy's equivilant of my job in the Army... construction engineer), in which case, God help you.
Still, though, I don't ever condone people joining the military since by doing so, you feed the war machine, and that's just not cool.
Definitely yes. Join the military. Becoming an officer, joining AF or Navy.. big deal.. To me military service gave me a strength which represents more then being physically strong but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually as well. It wasn't all about the money and benefit.
Although I was in ROK Army (conscript forces), paid, and equipped poorly compared to US troops, I have no regret.
The military life is not for everyone, but it is great for those who can hit the ground running.
I tell people not to go in as enlisted, because financially it's a huge struggle.
There aren't as many benefits now as there used to be.
But officers have it pretty cushy.
well for one, Im not really joining the military for money. but I do consider the benefits such as retiring in 20. other than that, thanx for giving me the low down between navy/af
dont let the benefits be your deciding factor to join.
I pretty much agree with SoldierGirl. The air force is more like college in uniform. Then on the opposite end you have the Marines.
I wouldnt suggest joining the military, but if youre considering it look into AF of Navy Reserves with a good military occupation that has transferable skills upon getting out.
