FORMER One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, the proudly outspoken proponent of polarising immigration policies, has discovered she is of Middle Eastern heritage.
Ms Hanson said she was "amazed" and "mystified" to learn of her ancestry.
A recent DNA swab, taken with Ms Hanson's permission by The Sunday Mail, has revealed the controversial former MP's genetic makeup is drawn from a rich multicultural background, with 9 per cent originating in the Middle East, 32 per cent from Italy, Greece or Turkey and 59 per cent from northern Europe.
When told of the results, the former fish and chip shop owner appeared flustered, making references to "rape and pillage" in ancient times, adding:
"All I can think of is that probably down the track it eventuated from some war.
"But I'm not going to knock it. It has made me who I am."
Broncos Test forward Sam Thaiday also agreed to be tested.
The Torres Strait Islander was found to be 53 per cent European and 47 per cent east Asian.
Interesting. I never realised that the Thaiday lads were part East Asian. Milton was a brilliant fullback/wing for NSW Waratahs and now plays league for the Newcastle Knights.
There are a lot of indigenous people from certain parts of Oz who have a lot of Chinese or Japanese ancestry, particularly around places like Broome or Darwin where Chinese and Japanese men came to work in the pearl fisheries, trochus shell-hunters, etc. and stayed and married indigenous women. You see them on tv like "Ben Ah Kit" and "Betsy Nakajima" on programs like Message Stick.
Torres Strait islanders where kidnapped as slaves and brought to Australia to cut sugarcane in FNQ (Far North Queensland) and the Chinese were also brought in as cheap labour to cut sugarcane and clear scrubland (a job so gruelling before the introduction of the tractor that no European was tough or determined enough to do it).
So it's not surprising that the Chinese intermarried with Torres Strait Islanders.

Pauline makes bogans look smart.
She could just as well be descended from an Afghan camel-herder or a Christian Lebanese immigrant. Both these groups have been present in Australia for a long time.
There are lots of Aussies who have part Chinese ancestry but they don't know about it because it was hidden away as a shameful family secret and they passed themselves off as "white" as soon as their bloodline was diluted enough for them to get away with it.
Maxine McKew (the former journo and now Labor candidate challenging John Howard in the seat of Bennelong) I suspect has Chinese ancestry, judging by her facial features. I also knew a chiropractor with another Irish-sounding name (McNeilly) who says she isn't but you can see that she obviously is.
They are everywhere. In the early days of the Sydney settlement, many emancipated Irish convict women married Chinese immigrant men because they were a much better bet as spouses than the emancipated Irish convict men (who were violent, useless drunkards). It's not a well-known fact but you do see a paragraph here and there in the history texts.
I was going to make a "Pauline needs some Asian in her to make herself fully multicultural" joke but I quickly realised that none of my Asian brothers could go to such low.

I've read some articles on that. It's similar to what happened in North American too, apparently. It makes my blood boil to know how much of Asian contribution and history in these nations are maliciously "forgotten".

Thanks for the read... irony at its best...
ppl like her never learn... quite the rational... "rape and pillage" indeed...

You'd be amazed how many people know about it.
I learned about it for the first time when I read about it in a special Historical Insert in The Australian newspaper quite a number of years ago. That was where I found out that FNQ was cleared by Chinese coolies who were then kicked out of the country once they had outlived their usefulness.
The article made it clear though that the Chinese were the only ones who were prepared to do the hard yakka. Similarly, it was the Chinese who cleared the rainforest from Penang island so that settlement and development could take place. It was just too fucking hard for anyone else to tackle.
