To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand,
And eternity in an hour.

The media reports constant tensions but I spent a month in Israel 2 years ago and tought it was fine. At first it took me a while to get used to seeing armed guards everywhere (malls, entrances to housing neighborhoods, etc) but after a while you don't even notice being stopped and searched every time you enter a building. Haha. Seriously though, I never really felt in danger and I was all over the place, though not in the thick of terrorist areas like you might be, depending on what you're volunteering for. I mostly stayed Jerusalem, in a neighborhood that bordered Bethlehem... which is Muslim occupied btw, so my friends couldn't go there. All the houses in our neighborhood had bulletproof windows and a special 'bomb' room that won't collapse if a building gets hit. Crazy I guess but, meh, I slept okay.
As a traveler, I love Israel. The food is amazing though, daily life can be a bit on the expensive side compared to a lot of the other places I've been. Israeli sites are stunning and soaked in history and diversity. Must go's include, the Old City in Jerusalem, the Dead Sea (cover yourself in the mud and then float like a ball... it's so fun!)... after that, the Ein Gedi is so close... hike to the waterfall oasis in the desert! If you can, cross the border into Jordon and see Petra. It's awe-inspiring... I could go on and on but... you get the point.
Ok... one more... you can seriously do a fun version of white water rafting on the Jordon River. Yes, that's the one Jesus was baptized in. LoL It's awesome! It flows into the Sea of Galilee (which is really a lake).
Know that the people there have very different customs than we do. They are always in a rush and are annoyed sometimes by our 'pleasantries' and small talk.

I am in communication with people there who are working for peace. It is a real struggle, but they give me this sense that they are not a small minority and that the picture we have in the USA is totally warped to make us think there are only enemies, fear, hatered, etc.
so i just watched occupation 101. really really interesting documentary. makes me sad and angry and it really makes you ask 'what the fuck is going on'? crazy. guys have to check it out
