Yeah, I've heard Perth described as 'the most isolated city in the world'. I'm still trying to imagine what that must feel like.
Still, Perth is only a few hours' flying time from Bali, Singapore and Bangkok, right?
The sport thing - yes, I think the obsession with sport has gone too bloody far. At least in Sydney you can get away from the league or the union (except when the traffic jams up Anzac Parade down the road from my place) - but you can't really get away from it in the AFL states, can you? It's bloody everywhere.
I suppose there is 'culture' and 'history' but you have to get off your arse and go looking for it and it's not always what you may be after. There are no forts or palaces or suits of armour and that kind of jazz. If you're lucky, you might find a small museum in a country town where you pay money to look at bits of broken and rusty farm implements and machinery.
There are even Aboriginal rock art sites around the Sydney area if you know where to find them.
