AznLover Asia & the PacificDiscussions about living, working, studying, visiting, or playing in Asia & the Pacific or Downunder.
In my original post, I talked about my mate, Pete, a full-blood Korean who I'd grown up with, watching him rip in the surf and struggle in the pub with Aussie girls.
There wasn't a harder gig in the 80s than being Asian and trying your luck with surfer girls
It's the surf culture... need I say more?
Have a conversation with your average surfer dude about girls and you will understand everything you need to know about sexual dynamics within 2 minutes. It's hypermasculine, incredibly sexist and superficial and very, very misogynist.
Surf culture is pretty much about the adulation of the White Male so it's a tougher scene than most to crack.
But it's not insurmountable. Australian women hook up with Asian surfers up in Bali and on NSW and Queensland beaches all the time - it happens.
I asked Peter why he thought this was and he said "it's probably because Aussie chicks aren't used to talking Asian guys. It's just what you're brought up with."
^ This is true but it's only partially true. There are always women around who are willing to buck the system or want something different from the norm.
BTW, if the story is to be believed then the Korean-Aussie bloke's perceptions are shaped by where he grew up. There is a lot of diversity between the different regions of Sydney. If the dude was raised in Cronulla-Sutherland or the Northern Beaches/Manly Peninsula then you would understand why he had a hard time when he was younger.
Also, the rules change when you get older and move into different age groups and the girls also wise up and aren't as bound into social or peer pressure like they are when they are still at school.
Having married a Caucasian girl and since had a child with her, Peter is well aware of the consequences of bucking tradition; his mother refused to come to his wedding.
"Especially with Koreans, there's a lot of national pride involved, it's like losing face if you
^ This part indicates that 'Peter' (K-Aus bloke) may have also had cultural issues on his side that acted as a barrier that hindered him from throwing his leg over a sheila and getting his end in.
Or he had standards that he refused to drop. There are certain situations like parties and Bachelors and Spinsters Balls and such where if you can't pull a root then you're not trying hard enough. But you have to take pot luck. And sometimes it's hairy and it goes oink.
It's fine to have really high standards, in fact it's recommended. But it's also a choice that you have to live with. If you require women to be of a high standard before you hook up with them then you also have to step up. Those are the Rules.

Another thing, guys. Beware of journalistic licence (ie journos making stuff up to make a neat 'story').
I have a real hard time believing that a fit Australian-born Asian dude who chops up the waves on his board by day and is popular with lots of mates has a hard time scoring with the birds. Unless he had bad breath or something or couldn't handle his alcohol. I just don't think I can buy it.
Anyone with that amount of status and social prestige and (presumably) looks is going to score. Maybe not all the time but at least some of the time. If the story is true and the bloke was experiencing a serious drought then there must have been something wrong with his Game or perhaps he had cultural or self-esteem issues.
Mate, I can't even stand up and I dated a Cronulla chick at uni. She looked a bit like Livinia Nixon. She had that blonde, girl-next-door thing happening. That's one of the reasons why I dig Livinia.
When you say Asian men, you would do well to be a bit more specific. There are the Orientals and the South Asians (Indians). I belong to the latter and have got on very well with the Aussie girls. Opposites attract, I can tell you that. I think the subcontinent being a former British colony is closer to Aussie culture (cricket, football, rugby, pubs etc.), and therefore there's alot more to talk about.
It also must have something to do with the fact that India actually is a part of the African mainland and slammed into Asia, creating the Himalayan mountains. Ethnically, it got a lot more interesting when the Aryans opened the floodgates of cultural intermingling, with the Greeks (thru the North), Portugese thru the West), Dutch (thru the South), and English (Everywhere) following suit.
So to cut a long story short, Indians have interesting bloodlines, and the Aussie chicks dig that. And vice-versa!
^ Check out the try-hard, wannabe fuckwit with the Inferiority Complex that is so thick that you could cut it with a knife.

I still haven't finished reading it! I think the fact this blog has got the most responses so far (526) says something about the interest in AMWF in Australia at the moment... it's on the rise!
