They aired that show The Block here in Canada and I started watching it just for the accents. Didn't learn a thing about renovation, but I sure learned a lot about how to stab people in the back.
Anyway.... thanks to the Internet, I've been watching that new show on Australian tv called Tripping Over. Again, just for the accents.
The show is ok. I was pretty surprised by the sex scene in the first episode. And the swearing. Dropped the f-bomb a few times.
Is this normal? Isn't this on regular tv at a regular hour?
This would NEVER ... EVER... air in Canada that way.

Swearing, exposed genitalia and heavy drug use are all on the table after 9 p.m. or thereabouts.
A few years ago, they aired the infamous blowjob scene from La Tarea uncut - not graphic but might as well have been due to the way they cleverly used camera angles. And every now and then they will showcase interesting directors such as Catherine Breillat.
The Special Broadcasting Service shows European soft porn movies (cunningly disguised as 'art') quite regularly -- www.sbs.com.au
Here, you might get some swearing and brief nudity on a cable channel, usually at 11pm.
But on network tv during prime-time, it's strictly PG. I think NYPD Blue used to have some brief butt shots every now and then, but audiences didn't really care and no one really does this anymore. And with the whole Janet Jackson Superbowl thing, everyone is gun shy these days.
Personally, I don't care about a little nudity. It's harmless. But on Tripping Over, they were clearly having sex. I was pretty surprised to say the least. I guess Australians are used to it. That kind of thing would have the special interest groups up in arms over here.
Well, recently, shows with violence and drug use seem to be getting pushed into later and later timeslots -- The Sopranos and Mile High were rescheduled to after 11pm or midnight. But Tripping Over airs on free-to-air at 8.30pm. It's not the sex it's the violence and the drug use that are the controversial issues, I would think.
Never mind the sexual content. What I find alarming about australian tv lately is the number of mindnumbing quasi-quiz type gigs. They've found a barrage of plastic folk ( I think they all worked call centres) to goad the general public into calling up and winning 'prizes' for the most random answers to the simplest categories. Is it the money or is it just that everyone wants to be on TV????

I like watching that brunette with the tan and the big tits.

Are there any other made-in-Australia tv dramas worth checking out?
Australian TV productions are generally rubbish with crap acting and dimwitted scriptwriting for idiots but Blue Murder was awesome. Based on the Sydney gangland wars of the 1980s it was banned from screening in New South Wales until the last of the trials were finished (as the material concerned was considered to be prejudicial to the fair conduct of the trials). First tim eI ever saw it was on a bootleg VHS tape that someone brought in from interstate.
^ just don't expect too much - some of the writing is a little bit dodgy and the acting is not first rate but you can see from the spirit of the scriptwriting that these were produced at a time when Oz was (briefly) a progressive, forward-looking country.
