Ashfield is in the inner west. Lots of Asian immigrants. It's ok, nothing remarkable. To get the best out of a stay in Sydney you should stay somewhere more central near the harbour or in the east or north where the beaches are.

The west can seem like one gigantic slum -- highways, featureless suburbs, hot weather (no seabreezes).

Hey great news Katinka

As stated Ashfield is a normal suburb, BUT it has one of the larger train stations so transport there is excellent. There are trains to Ashfield every few minutes and it doesn't take too long to get to the city (from which it is easy to go anywhere).

Ashfield is quite a little Asian town, lots of asian restaurants all over the place...

it's a nice little suburb, with lots of (asian) shops surrounding the train station and a shopping centre just around the corner.

Generally in Sydney, the more east you go the more asians you meet. However Ashfield located somewhat in the middle of Sydney. And it's probably the second chinatown (unofficially).
