don't know if i'm asking for too much. but lately, i've been thinking about going back to china to live for a couple of years to brush up on my mandarin. the first time i was there, my health was compromised by the air pollution. beijing is one of the top 10 polluted cities in the world and i'm not about to put myself through that again. my canadian lung cannot handle that. so does anyone know of a relatively clean city in china? more like first world standard clean. qingdao had been frequently mentioned as such of a city. is that true or are there cleaner coastal cities.

given the fact china has the largest population.......... maybe pollution is good for u in long run.....

I spent two weeks in Beijing last year and ended with a extreme case of coughing and hacking after I get back. It wasn't a pretty picture. . My suggestion? Go buy a gas mask or one of those face mask you see people wear.

i'm moving to hong kong in a few months and i'm wondering if pollution is bad there too? i'm guessing it is but then again i'll be cominig from nyc... it's not that clean here either

There are no environmentally clean cities in China.

Be sure that you only drink clean, bottled water, rather than from the tap.

Also get yourself Hepatitis B shots before you visit, since the chances of you contracting that is high.

This is not a joke. The air/water pollution, and sanitary standards are vastly different from the west.

I know what you mean. I'm Chinese but I hate pollution and am a big environmental guy so it hurts to see so much pollution when it's so easy to reduce, reuse and recycle. In Hong Kong, I don't remember seeing a single recycling bin, but that was years ago. There was talk of adding a tax to plastic bags not too long ago.

Hopefully China will smarten up and learn from the Japanese and S. Korean experience.
