So I'm wondering how folks on here are bragging about tracking someone down with an IP when the RIAA had to take ISP companies to court to find out personal information.
Surely the RIAA has more resources available to them than your average Aznlover member.

John, when your ISP shipped you your cpe/endpoint or cable modem, they keep a record of the unique MAC address of that device and your shipping address and you.
Now this unique MAC address gets flooded on the network during ARP requests and DHCP discoveries if it is going through layer 2 devices.
If I have your IP address, I can obtain your unique MAC address doing such thing as snooping ARPs, DHCP discovery traffic, etc. However, I still would have to go through your ISP to get your shipping address. So I need corporation from your ISP to track you down.
Now if you are stupid enough to keep your home address and personal info on your computer somewhere, BINGO!!!
