Germans can be wonderfully warm and friendly people. If complete strangers start conversations with you then be sure to take the effort to engage them. This was one of the nicest things I experienced while I was over there. Manners are very important to Germans and they often observe the formalities, especially with new acquaintances.
How did you come to this conclusion? Hehehe... It's quite accurate, but not many people would think that of Germans. I am sometimes having a hard time defending my "German-ness" here in Australia. But then again I only know since I've gotten here that I actually AM quite German in my ways (I used to think the complete opposite).
As for your trip, Lemont, I was living in Cologne for a while and really liked it alot. Good city for art and partying, and the girls are stunning. Then again most people say Hamburg is the best city for those things just mentionned (including the girls), but I haven't been, so I don't really know. Anyway, hope you'll have a blast!

I am a keen observer of humanity and I also have a great affection for German people (well, most of them LOL).
In fact, I think that Germans are generally warmer than Australians. Australians are often very guarded and closed off, underneath the 'open' exterior. Germans are often more willing to judge people on their merits rather than on the exterior. Germans are also more honest.
When was the last time somebody looked you in the eye in Sydney during a personal encounter? In Germany, it is mandatory. When was the last time somebody looked at you in Sydney when they said cheers? Sydneysiders... hmmph.
BTW, there is a little village/row of shops in West Gordon (lower north shore, off the Pacific Highway) that is all German and Swiss shops and cafes, just in case you are craving wurst or semmeln.
Yes, Dusseldorf is known to be the longest bar in the world. Love the place.
I double my charm (pics) music_((d-_-b))

Wow! I'm impressed. You make us sound quite likable, haha! Hey, how about you and your better half and my boyfriend and I go for good German bratwurst sometime? LOL!

[quote=l3chatnoir;240138]I lost all faith in Americans visiting Europe. Most say they've seen everything - a day in Barcelona, a day in Rome, a day in Milan and Turin, a day in Nice and Monte Carlo, a day in Paris, a day in Cologne, a day in Berlin, another day in Copenhagen, sometimes another in Stockholm and they go home. They claim to know and understand European cities and people to the bone.
Pardon my language but Most Americans do not give a fuck about the truth especially when travelling. One day in all those cities is enough bragging rights to say they ve seen Europe. It is the mentality in which they have been brought up with. Everything is XXXL in America; from coffee to cars. They have this mindset that bigger is better. These are the same people that spend a week in jamaica at some resort away from the city and the people that live within that city. And they claim to know jamaica because one day they had enough courage with the aid of a tourist guide to go to Bob Marley's house and smoke some maryjane. Forget about their biggotry because these types of people will never hope to understand European culture because they are just there to have a good time and afterwards to run their mouth so that they can feel better about themselves.

My Canadian flatmate mixes all European countries with each other. One day when she says something funny, I will say "You Mexicans are hilarious!"

Great idea. Are you in Sydney right now? It's freezing! I love eating that kind of food in this weather. hahaha
BTW, there is an interesting little Polish place in Glebe ("Na Zdrowie") that we haven't tried yet. After they had a great write-up in the SMH, they have been fully booked for 3 weeks straight!
"Na Zdrowie", how cute! My parents are actually from Poland (Slonska to be exact, I'm sure I misspelled it, though...) and I grew up with a bit of Polish food myself. My favourite place is Japanese, though, "ichi-ban boshi". It's in the galleries Victoria where the big bookstore is, 'Kinokuniya'. Let me know whenever you feel like having lunch just PM. Sydney IS freakin freezin!
