AznLover EuropeDiscussions about living, working, studying, visiting, or playing in Europe.
Been in Belgium half a week now with Erasmus students.
I am one of 2-3 minorities outta 200 Erasmus students in this city. So far I've partied only once with everybody but I definately do NOT get a good vibe here, at least from other Europeans.
A lot of people have very simplistic and somewhat negative views of Asians, and while many people are nice, a lot of Euros are also pretty rude. Not that many make eye contact for too long, which was surprising to me.
Talked to a few girls, but I didn't think any were more or less interested because I was Canadian or something. My other white Canadian friends, who are not good looking, got attention for being north american, along with other white Americans. I meant, some girls just went up to them after they found out he was American (good for him lol). I have heard that some north americans saying that Europe is a lot easier, and I guess that is true if ur white!
Now, the locals however, seem to be more promising. Haven't gotten a chance to hit up local places, however.
dude, don't be so conscious of race. Just be outgoing with the ladies and have a good time. Quit worrying about what other might be thinking.

Been sick the past few days, haven't really partied much at all.
Mixed opinions about local belgians. People say they are shy here, and not outgoing. I didn't really believe them at first until I went to a bar and saw that no one approached strangers...EVER
Guys would just sit and drink a beer, and a table of girls would be there as well, and neither side would acknowledge one another. Can't blame them, girls at bars are not talkative unless they have an obvious crush on you. I asked a few locals and they confirmed what I saw. Everyone assumes I am from Taiwan or something (sometimes Japan), and some say I can't be a true canadian..lol...
Oh...btw...got my first racial heckling as well.
Some high school girls started shouting at me and pretending to speak chinese to make fun of me until I started shouting back. Pretty funny, but not something I expected here in Antwerp where Asians are really few.
Anyways, this place is still a lot better than back home I'd say.
However, for those who think Europe is a paradise for minorities...it isn't!
I can't think of one country where minorities are the shit
I met a few Belgian folk when I was in Ireland. I found them to be really friendly. Actually, I was hitting on this one girl, really good looking. And she was very receptive. Or at least played along until her boyfriend came back from the bathroom. When they left the bar, I caught eye contact, and she waved bye.
Anyway, Erasmus! Nice! I first heard about it from watching the movie "L'auberge Espagnole"...I wonder if the movie portrayal was accurate. Are you living in an apartment or on school grounds?
