I know what you mean - the old joke is that one needs to go back to eat SE asian hawker foods to "fortify" the stomach with additional bugs. Unfortunately, no. However the people who speak Bahasa Melayu will most likely understand you. Bahasa Indonesia is like super formal languange, whereas Bahasa Melayu has a lot more slang, and tends to mix with the local dialects.

Do you intend on visiting Malaysia?

My relatives there used to giggle whenever I spoke to them in Bahasa Indonesia. They'd understand, but they would be all like "Why awak cakap so formal lah?" (Why do you speak so formally?)
