Just wondering since I'm Indonesian and all, what is the general feeling of European countries towards Indonesia? I've heard there is a huge fascination with the culture in the Netherlands, and in the past have met German travellers who are really interested in it too, especially Bali (By the way, the country has much more to offer than just Bali)
Which countries have a stronger affection than others? and which countries are less so? What is your impression? (granted there has been A LOT of negative press on Indonesia lately, but please don't turn this thread into a bitter political / religious one)
I find it interesting to note the reference here to AM are generally North / North East Asia, not so much South East Asia, India or Central Asia.

I know Indonesian is Asian but to be honest I don't know enough about your culture, possibly ignorance on my part but the things i do know about South East Asia, India or Central Asia aren't very positive, being black i know not to believe everything i read or hear from others so i look forward to seeing what your views are on the board.
I do find that Indian men are very attracted to me and have had Indian people mistake me for being Indian but then I'm mistaken for being Haitian which is quite funny.
kinda of off topic but i'm being honest

Yeah Indonesia has been receiving a lot of bad press here lately in Australia. I even started to believe them and started distancing myself from the culture (I know, such as shame). That is until my brother did a soul searching backpacking trip over there. He went to this awesome place called Gili Islands and met lots of Indonesians who were living under the poverty line who got hit hard by the crisis 10 years ago. They were super friendly, chilled, and still able to laugh despite it all!

I`ve visited Indonesia three times and I`ve been to Sumatra (Medan, Palembang), Java (Jakarta) and Bali.
I know a lot of Orang tionghoa (Indonesian Chinese).
Hey I come from Palembang! (well my mum anyway). To be honest I didn't really like it It was hot, sticky, dry and dirty. I never knew Palembang was on the traveller's trail, didn't seem like a backpacking destination to me. Any reasons why you were there?
I was born in Australia, but went back and lived in Jakarta for 10 years and still wonder how I pulled through (I was a kid then so I didn't know any better). Uch, not a nice place at all. I don't think it's a leaves a good impression of the country. Still one day I'd love to go back and do a big trek across the country. The diversity is incredible. In a way I think it's impossible to generalise a country with so much diversity as Indonesia, so I'll keep my comments to the areas I've visited.
It`s pretty chaotic and it seems like a miracle the place is ticking at all.
I like the malls Taman Angrekk and Blok M, Teh Botol and Glodok. I mainly stayed in Kebayoran baru.
Yeah in a weird kind of way, at times I do miss the chaos of Jakarta. Compared to Jakarta, Sydney is like a sleepy little town, not much happens. Oh and I miss how me and my neighbours used to hang out outside each other's house just playing the guitar (my neigbhour not me ) and we'd say hi to everyone else.
Yeah Teh Botol is like the no 1 indo soft drink next to Bintang Beer.
Hey you guys got any tips on places to go and see around Jakarta? My ship will be going to Indonesia in January; although I am not definite about the exact port.
