Yes, twice. Just went in Oct 2006 in fact. I love that place and can spend hours and hours there.

Apart from the fantastic art work, you might want to note the following things:

- Unless you really have to, try not to enter the museum from the front entrance (the big glass pyramid) cos it mostly likely will be a long lineup depending on what time you arrive. Instead, enter from the back entranace through the underground shopping centre and avoid the big tourist crowd!

- And while you are walking through that underground shopping centre...do line up this time and take a picture with the supposed tomb of Mary Magdalene...Go on, you know you want to!

- Start early and go straight and visit Mona Lisa...the first time you see Mona Lisa you'll be thinking...it's so small! Also, note that no matter where you walk, she will still look you in the eye (just a painting technique)!...oh did I just give that away?

Anyway, let me know if you need more info on France. Haven't been to Amsterdam tho.

don't limit yourself to the louvre and the orsay in paris.

hordes of tourists trample through those places as if they were a train station concourse--which the orsay, in fact, was.

the most charming museums are the smaller, lesser known ones--of which there are many.

Yes, when I was 6 yrs old which was kind of a shame because I don't remember it at all. Apparently, we queued for a bloody long time to get in. LOL The only three things I remember about Paris are the Tuileries, eating blueberry crepes outside the Metro and the COLD!

And I skipped Paris during my trip to Europe for lack of time - I had special reasons to go to Germany and England and chose not to lessen my time in either place for a side-trip to Paris. By way of consolation, I did get to spend a couple of days each at the British Museum and the Liechtenstein and Belvedere Museums in Vienna and sundry other smaller galleries and museums.

But Paris is the No.1 destination when the time comes to visit Europe again. High on my List are the Louvre and the Orsay and perhaps the Monet House in Giverny. Also keen on Prague, Budapest, Dresden, Cologne.

BTW, Selene, if you're in Adelaide these days the Louvre's visiting collection of Egyptian Antiquities should be arriving in the next couple of weeks.

They're packing it up in Canberra after this weekend and shipping it to SA for the next leg of the tour.

A little carry-on baggage is ok, but baggage like that has to be checked at the door. Goldengirl, December 21st '08
