Next time you're washing your undies at the local launderette, watch out for two of Hollywood's biggest stars.
Kate Bosworth, who played Lois Lane in Superman Returns and a surfer babe in Blue Crush, and Geoffrey Rush, star of Shine, Shakespeare In Love, and Pirates of the Caribbean, are in town to start shooting fantasy action movie Laundry Warrior on Monday in West Auckland.
Okay, so the pair will more than likely stay at a fancy hotel and get their laundry done there but those Lord of the Rings actors got down with the locals when they were here, so you never know.
Bosworth arrived last Thursday but it was not known whether Rush had arrived yet.
Laundry Warrior, with a budget of $52 million, also stars Korean actor Jang Dong-gun as Yang, an Asian warrior hiding out in the badlands of America's mid-west.
The story revolves around Yang, who has made a new life for himself as a laundryman in America.
Word on the street is that the film will be a samurai movie meets western mix, with stylised special effects giving it an anime meets 300 feel.
Rush, who also plays Queen Elizabeth's "spymaster" Walsingham in Elizabeth: The Golden Age will be the town drunk in Laundry Warrior, and Bosworth plays a circus knife-thrower.
The 24-year-old Superman star replaced Chinese actress and Memoirs of a Geisha star Zhang Ziyi who was originally cast as female lead until filming dates were changed.
Lord of the Rings producer Barrie Osborne, who divides his time between shooting films in New Zealand and overseas projects, will produce the movie, to be shot at Henderson Valley Studios.
Here's a promo pic for the movie. Essentially, it's a Samurai meets Western theme, and it's going to have almost an anime look and feel to it.
From what I've read, Zhang Ziyi was the original love interest but she dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. I've also heard that they asked Gong Li but she declined (but I think this is just a rumor). Then they simply rewrote Kate Bosworth's character and made her the love interest.
Here's an article about the movie:
"According to "Variety,'' the film has a $40 million budget through Sad Flute, a company set up by Osborne and Michael Peyser ("Speed 2'').
"We drew on two great genres, the Samurai movie and the Western,'' Peyser was quoted as saying according to the entertainment magazine. "We will deliver a stylized, partly anime feel, with the techniques of '300', but a look that is brighter.''
The production will employ extensive green screen techniques, and special effects gurus like Christian Rivers ("King Kong'') from New Zealand-based Weta Digital and Michael Pangrazio, who created the visuals for "Star Wars'' and "Sin City,'' will take part in the filmmaking. For post-production, talents behind "X-Men 2'' (Jason Piccioni) and "Lord of the Rings'' (Dan Hennah) will participate.
Three-time Academy Award-winning costume designer James Acheson ("Spider-Man'') will be in charge of completing the look of "Laundry Warrior.''
Jang, Korea's iconic pretty face, gained status as a certified actor through his breakthrough role as a tough guy in the film "Friend,'' and has starred in some of highest grossing local films such as "Taegeukgi: Brothers of War'' and "Typhoon.'' He rose to hallyu superstardom through TV dramas like "All About Eve,'' which was highly popular in Central and South America."
Format: 35mm Feature Film
Dates: Nov 2007 - Feb 2008
Location: Auckland, New Zealand (Henderson Valley Studios)
Production Company: Sad Flutes Ltd
Producer: Barrie Osborne (he Produced "Lord of the Rings" and "Matrix")
This has a lot of good potential, but they gotta change the title.

I read that Kate Bosworth had a minor role originally. For a while people were saying that she and Zhang Ziyi were both going to be in the movie. I bet what happened was they decided to re-write the script to make Kate the lead. Of course it hurt Zhang Ziyi's pride so she dropped out just before filming. The scheduling conflict thing sounds like an excuse.
"Laundry Warrior" will be watered-down, particularly if Kate Bosworth is paired off as the love interest of the Korean actor. And that's assuming that the movie even makes it to theaters.
BTW, here's a little tidbit about Kate Bosworth:
She bought the movie rights to a novel written by Canadian writer Catherine Hanrahan titled "Lost Girls and Love Hotels" and wants to produce and star in a movie based on this book.
Too bad that this movie will probably never see the light of day due to the subject matter. And if it does, it will be direct-to-video. The book is about a white woman in Japan who does a lot of soul-searching after partying and sleeping with lots of Asian guys.
Yup, the white guys with small penises who run Hollywood are certainly going to greenlight "Lost Girls" and any movie like it. And I bet the Korean actor in "Laundry Warrior" will show his chops as a leading man by shaking Kate Bosworth's hand in the movie!
yeah, hollywood is reluctant to show sex between caucasian women and black or asian men. But that "Lost Girls and Love Hotels" idea sounds like it would be an independent film. Indy films don't water down am/wf pairings. Have you seen 'Little Fish' with Cate Blanchette and Dustin Nguyen.

That part about shaking Kate's hand made me chuckle.
My memory of Asian pop movies is fading, but IIRC in most of them, they cast the prettiest male & female leads they can find, make them go through all sorts of dramatic BS then reward the audience with the "climax" scene where the two either hug each other & cry in the pouring rain or hold hands & run around on a sunny field. Not even a T&A scene. That's why they pirate movies in Asia, as they feel cheated.
I hope JDG doesn't have to repeat that this time. Getting down & dirty in a laundry with Kate Bosworth is

Wasn't Shanghai Hug, I mean Kiss, an indy one? The movie with Hayden the cheerleader chick from Heroes. They replaced the kissing scene with a hug.
