I have to say...Toronto people are nice and friendly!
There are three Canadians in my class.
One is a guy, who's married, lives in Indiana, but originally was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He's probably the friendliest non-Asian guy in my class who sits with me at lunch, and studies together with me. He even invited me over to his house to have dinner two weeks ago!
Then there's this pretty chick who's from Toronto. I thought she was a Canadian by ethnicity, but it turns out that she's Albanian. She already has a BF, but she always greets me with a smile, just makes my day feel ...great.
So my conclusion? Canadian girls (and European girls) tend to be more open-minded and friendly than a lot of the American girls I've encountered.
All my life I have always loved Canada, Canadian national policy in general, specific projects and missions of Canadian groups and organizations I became familiar with, and every Canadian I have ever met. More than once I considered immigrating to Canada, but considered being a US citizen my hardship, cross to bear mission in this life time.

We're a peace loving bunch! and you should immigrate to Canada... you wouldn't be the only American here that I know to have done so and loving it!
I also know temporary Canadians... who are American's they travel with a patch of Canadian Flag on their back packs and such... because of the reputation you mentioned above... American's pretending to be Canadian often get better treatment in foreign countries and It's a growing trend.
