We have them here in the US, too.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) sells them and uses the funds in the Soldiers and Sailors Homes.
I don't think it's quite that universal in the states... and I think Memorial Day is the BIG day US honours it's veterans...
Here, starting in November till the 11th... you'll see a donation box with red poppy's in every retail store and majority of the people will wear the poppy's...
Guess I'm showing my ignorance here but... do we do anything in the States for Veteran's Day? Besides raising the flag?
Some people wear poppies here, too. The first time my mom acknowledged that I am a veteran, she did so by giving me a red poppy on Veteran's Day as I was on my way out the door to go spend the day at the VFW.
