It is a common thing for me to see Chinese mothers strongly reprimand and threaten to beat their toddlers - male or female - who are being too boisterous and are running about laughing and playing during a family outing. Apparently, it's not "proper behavior".
I never considered the HEIGHTS this could achieve until one day, I saw a female relative with her very young daughter (who was very cute), walking around obediently with her HANDS clasped behind her back, with her EVERY movement either being reprimanded for being improper or rewarded for being a "good girl" over the course of several hours.
Such sights, truly make me SICK.
If you KILL that vivacity at such an early age it is going to be nearly impossible to cultivate it later to even save a life.
I was witness to quite a lot of this kind of horrid abuse while growing up when I spent part of the year within the Asian community/enclaves.
More than one of my grandmother's peers would repeatedly quote "better to raise a child to be stupid and obedient than have an intelligent/independent child who's prone to rebel".
Even as a six year old, I knew there was something profoundly sick, twisted and evil with that sentiment.
If there is one aspect of Asian culture that sickens me to my stomach, it's the way all too many Asian parents are all too ready to cut their chidren down to size and make them feel like shit in order to make them more malleable.
Ever read Bill Lee's Chinese Playground? I knew most of the people he was talking about in that book and the kinds of hypocrisy, morally corrupt, and sheer manipulative abuse he experienced at the hands of his parents were/are the norms rather than the exceptions.
Like little brother from WT said, "These parents psycohlogically castrate their sons and you wonder why they have confidence/self esteem issues?"
Just as I'm glad dad came here as a pre-teen and assimilated early on, little brother was damned grateful that his upbringing was closer to the Texan mainstream ( his dad moved to Texas from Taiwan early in his life) rather than some stifling Confucian hellhole of an existence.
Uhh, the SAME THING also applies to non-married, co-habiting couples.
Personal anecdotes are highyl UNRELIABLE - which is why stats are a much better gauge of how things are.
As for Hen - maybe the girl rejected Hen b/c she didn't find HIM attractive.
And yes - while there are the negative sterotypes about AMs - if you are able to overcome them, then, on average, I'd say that you should do BETTER than a BM of equal looks, build, etc. (and this is coming from a multitude of experiences of jock/frat-boy AMs in comparison to jock/frat-boy BMs.
I'm not excusing it, but they, too, are "victims" of their environment and media imagery.
For example, if there were actually media images of handsome, built AMs coupled w/ AFs, WFs, BFs, etc. - these guys would no longer think AMs = undesireable and instead, realize that they just don't "cut it".
It's the converse of the reason why dorky WM asiaphiles are insecure around WFs (esp. those who are at least half-decent looking), but all of a sudden are full of confidence in an Asian crowd.
I beg to differ - by virtue of being white, they DID benefit (otherwise, the "poor" whites wouldn't be living as well as they are and instead, be living in shantytowns w/ no electricity or running water and full of human waste).
In this media-heavy age of ours I think no image would be more powerful than having an Asian Man screwing/dating/marrying a Hollywood A-List actress (especially a white one)!

Is this a Chinese thing? I never encountered this.

Probably more common in the Chinese working class enclaves based in heavily populated urban areas.
It's not uncommon for dad to piss away the family's hard earned money from his shit job on gambling while the mother is busy working in a goddamned sweatshop.
And when there is interaction between the parents and the kids - usually the mom - its for the express purpose of chewing out the kids pointing out what a burden it is to raise them and how they (parents) get no gratitude, in return, and how the children had damned well better occupy their every waking moment with returning a favor that can neve be repaid in full..
The kids are usually left to look out for themselves. Some find escape in their academic schoolwork - which the parents actively encourage but are of no help whatsoever - while the other kids end up with the gangs.
Dad ain't around to look out for the kids so the boys find guidance/support with the local dai los.
My grandparents lived in one of these tenements where if the kids weren't roaming the streets they were roaming the rooftops with baseball bats looking to fuck up rival crews.
From what I know this kind of stuff is less pronounced in the newer Asian enclaves of Monterey Park, Alhambra and OC.
I would guess that a guy who is hung up on racial perception has low self-confidence, weak sef-esteem, a generic identity, and an inability to flirt or initiate a mutually sexual vibe.
None of this will be fixed by better AM representation in media. Some books I've read suggest that the concept of the self develops and "hardens" by late adolescence and that people typically do not act contrary to this. Better AM representation may help future generations of Asian men, but it isn't going to fix any issues any individuals are already dealing with.
While that may be true - it's much better than nothing (and at least the new generation of AMs wouldn't have such a messed up view of themselves; the same goes for AFs w/ regard to themselves and how they view AMs).
Take for instance BMs in the US. Once they had low-self image/worth as black men. Nowadays (according to a study done by the African-Am studies dept. at Harvard) - BMs have the highest self-image/worth w/ regard to their gender & race.
BFs, otoh, don't have as high self-image/worth due to the more negative media imagery w/ regard to gender/race.

While no doubt that it does happen, it's hardly a major problem in SA.
And it's not black SA's weren't beaten, raped or killed for simply being black either.
Despite the newfound "freedom" in SA, there very much still is a racial hierarchy in SA.
Anti-Immigrant Violence in Johannesburg

JOHANNESBURG — Violence against immigrants, like some windswept fire, spread across one neighborhood after another here in one of South Africa’s main cities this weekend, and the police said the mayhem left at least 12 people dead — beaten by mobs, shot, stabbed or burned alive.
Thousands of panicked foreigners — many of them Zimbabweans who have fled their own country’s economic collapse — have now deserted their ramshackle dwellings and tin-walled squatter hovels to take refuge in churches and police stations.
This latest outbreak of xenophobia began a week ago in the historic township of Alexandra and has since spread to other areas in and around Johannesburg, including Cleveland, Diepsloot, Hilbrow, Tembisa, Primrose, Ivory Park and Thokoza.
Amid so much violence, the police were spread thin, sending in squads of officers in armored vehicles. “We are using all available resources and will call in reinforcements if the need arises,” a police spokesman, Govindswamy Mariemuthoo, told reporters.
