You must have missed that post where I mentioned that it's all in good fun and that I actually LOVE poms.

Some of me best mates are pommie bastards. Truth.

Ain't you never noticed how testy things get in the office around the Aussies when the Ashes are on? It's par for the course, mate.

Come on, give us a break. It's called a wind-up.

^ Woops, my bad. I think it was actually George Orwell who said that.

In one of his essays in Jonah and the Whale..., IIRC. He's one of my heroes, BTW. He also happens to be English. But I don't consider him a pommie bastard.

When you read the 20thC writers like Orwell, Burgess, Greene and even Maugham, you become influenced by their critical (and sometimes acerbically cynical) views of British society and the British Empire in particular -- but you also grow to love the culture that produced these minds.

English people don't own British culture, BTW. Australians also inherited British culture and history.

"Krutts" LOL

Look, it's perfectly harmless: a 'pom' is simply an Australian-wannabe but can't afford the airfare and is stuck at home watching 'Home and Away' when they'd rather be queueing to board the plane at Heathrow.

'Pom' is not a racial slur, BTW, (but the epithets listed above are).

'Pom' is merely an affectionate nickname for an English person and it's supposed get up your nose a little bit. It's supposed to be annoying. Australians are supposed to annoy the English -- it has to do with the prison ships, the chains, the Potato Famine and Gallipoli.

As for myself, I hold an Official Licence To Annoy English People -- it's also referred to as my Certificate of Australian Citizenship. LOL

The general attitude over in Oz is that Australians are entitled to call Poms 'Poms' because our soldiers TWICE saved the British Empire from complete annihiliation at the hands of the "Krutts" (in 1914-1918 and again in 1939-1945). Oh, and the Yanks helped too. :WI-INK:

PS: we don't say 'Yank' -- we say 'Sepo'.

PPS: and, yes, you MAY call me "chinky". I would find that rather amusing.

Look, I'll try again: are you lot familiar with the term 'sibling rivalry'? Well, it's something like that but in international terms. Any of you lot got siblings? Do you have funny nicknames for them? Same thing.

If any of you ever travel Down Under for a Gap Year or something, you will realise after about a week that there is not a single ounce of malice contained in the everyday usage of the word 'pom'... unlike, say, when English people refer to Welshmen as 'Taffy' or Germans as 'Fritz', Irishmen as 'Paddy' or Orientals as 'chinky'. It's not even the same concept.
