I've never watched Aussie Soaps but I would imagine that those days are well over after the 10 years of conservative government that we Aussies have had to endure. Those shows depend on being sold to overseas television networks in the UK and the rest of Europe in order to make a profit and they tend to pander to European fantasies of Oz being some kind of Sun-drenched Caucasian Disneyland By the Sea.
Look at this way: your average Neighbours addict freezing his/her bollocks off in Scunthorpe or Pontypridd or Aberdeen wants to see a Downunder version of the British Working Class Utopia that Oz represents, not the reality of immigrants everywhere.
Mind you, there are still lots of whitebread suburbs all over the place just like Ramsay Street or Paradise Beach. The featureless monoculture at its lowest ebb. (vomit)
The same goes for other shows like McLeod's Daughters (sex orgies on a farm LOL) and Water Rats (utter tripe but it featured a Chinese forensic lab tech).
