Another theory I've heard is that Religious puritans dictated that enjoying food was BAD, and so the British started cooking "plainly". I don't know if this is true, but if you look at British recipes from the Middle ages up to the Elizabethan era, you'll find an astounding amount and variety of spices used. Then one day, the spices all vanished and the food became bland.

Just like the term 'baroque architecture' seems to mean a completely different thing in England than it does on the Continent. In England, it just pales in comparison with the stuff that the Italians, French and Austrians were allowed to get away with cos they were Catholics and not Protestants. They got away with using coloured paint for a start. LOL We can thank Fat Henry (VIII) for that lot.

I thought the chip butty was a delicacy from the north of England? It even sounds like northern food.

Make it on a fresh crusty bit of french baguette with chips fried in good old English lard and I reckon you might be on to something there.

Ever heard of kids eating C.C. sandwiches at playlunch? It has absolutely no redeeming qualities - bleedin' corn chips stuffed in between two slices of buttered white bread with tomato sauce! I can still remember my response when I first heard of 'em said:

"IT'S A ... WHAT??"

I just ran a Google search (butty + etymology). Apparently, 'butty' comes from "bread and butter". Of course.
