I know one of my British friends says he just can't understand them.
It's funny cause my English speaking Asian accented friends say they can't understand him! Oh well...
I've never heard of this before. I think in general brits might 'think' that they don't understand, but generally brits are too polite to say they don't understand.
Or at least if they said so they would be very PC about saying it.
Don't let what you can't do affect what you can do in life!

As to the original post . I wouldn't personally say so . I think most major cities here are multicultural enough to not automatically expect everyone to talk exactly as we do . As well as that the UK it'self contains a vast array of accents -you can travel a relatively short distance here and yet hear a completely different accent . So I would imagine that would make us slightly more used to a variety of accents than we could otherwise have been.
they find it very interesting to talk to people with different accent and will have more conversation in business as they will ask where you from and how long you been here stuff like that .
for example my chinese accent they will tell me they went to china before been to hong kong and i find it very useful for business.
Also sometime they will listen to you more as you speak !
