Disturbia

Disturbia

I watched Disturbia for the first time today, and I have to say it was disturbingly terrible, even for a horror/thriller film. It is generally accepted among film audiences that horror/thriller are allowed to get away with not having the greatest story/plot. But this film's plot was just terrible.

It was like watching two different movies. The first half was a romance/drama between the protagonist and his new neighbor girl. Up until about 45 minutes (How do I know? I timed it. Why? It's a screenwriter thing.) into the film, everything was just about the protag watching the girl, and how it eventually leads her into his bed.

And that's where the movie changes into a horror/thriller. Before they can do the nasty, they hear the bad guy disposing of a body. From that point on, the rest of the film is dedicated to catching the bad guy.

I decided to blog about this film because Aaron Yoo is a co-star . Based upon many threads on this site that complain about the portrayal of AM as weak, cowardly geeks, I assume there as quite stir about this movie because the character plays up those stereotypes. I can just imagine how many angry replies there were. But alas, I digress.

I find it completely and utterly purposeless to be upset about Aaron Yoos casting as a stereotypical AM. This movie was terrible, regardless of who was cast. Therefore the characters, and by characters I mean the fictional entities that appear on the pages of the screenplay, are going to be equally terrible. Why give this film enough merit to be offended by? It is a shitty film. You should be more angry that they even produced the movie.

On a last note, I do think the character of Ronnie was the smartest in the film. I mean, the white folks just love to investigate danger and stick their nose in shit. Ronnie was like "man this is stupid and I'm scared I'm gonna get killed cause. I don't give a fuck what you think, I'm scared! Especially since minorities always die in movies." Is that cowardly? Is that weak? That's somewhat smart.

Me, I would have been like. FUCK YOU. You better get that white bitch to go over there to that killers house!

When it first came out, I remember most reviewers took the biggest offense to how it was a ripoff, not homage to, but ripoff of "Rear Window".
And I think it's interesting that in your blog you've brought up how members here whine about AM stereotypes, and then you finish up with what the "white bitch" should have done. That would have really turned a filmmaking stereotype on its ear!

I actually loved the challenge of finding the plot to this movie.
I was doing my mental health clinical at the time I got to see it. so I figured it out.
I'm with you on the minorities always getting killed off in horror flicks. Now you know they wouldn't investigate skeery things further! But that's the thrill..*rolls eyes*
    Me,,,I flee the opposite direction!
