Sometime last week I discovered that two kids that come into Gold's Gym Kids Club speak fluent Japanese. The entire time I was at work, I eavesdropped in on their conversation. Not once did I attempt to speak to them in Japanese. It crossed my mind, but little Japanese kids (the oldest is 5) intimidate the hell out of me. Their Japanese is just so much better than mine. Rightfully, so I know, but it kind of sucks that I can barely communicate with a 5 year old! Then again, sometimes its hard to understand ANY 5 year old, regardless of the language.
Anyway, today I spoke to the kids mom. In Japanese. I LOVE the response I get. She lit up with surprise and kept complimenting me on how good my Japanese is (which is untrue). She asked me why and where I learned Japanese. And I actually understood some directions about her 2 daughters a lot better in Japanese. She doesn't speak the best English. To me, she looked relieved when she could explain herself in Japanese. I understand her feeling very well.
So I guess we have started a good relationship - she can speak the language she's most comfortable with speaking, and I can get much needed practice.
Oh, and on another note, I did not get into any trouble last night. Thanks for looking out!

I'm learning chinese at the moment, and have to admit, its very hard. I admire the fact that you can speak japanese, and the fact that you CAN have a full converstation with someone in japanese shows that you must speak it better than you think
I'm hoping that by the time I get to my international cusine class that I might be able to comunicate with the teacher. He doesn't speak english very well, and I know it must be frustrating for him to repeat himself all the time to his class 
Luckily I have basically a year to learn chinese, well...atleast the basics...enough hopefully to have a converstation with the chef But again, I do admire you, cause to me, asian languages are very hard to learn.Posted 06-26-2008 at 04:42 PM by Animewiccy

Thanks a lot, anime. I agree with you about Asian languages. I took Spanish in high school and in college, and looking back on it now, it was SO EASY. Hehe. Oh well. I've always liked Japanese more.Posted 06-26-2008 at 05:34 PM by 03elleinad
