Why I Love Sacramento
Posted 07-20-2008 at 04:21 PM by 03elleinad
Today was one of those rare days where I'm struck by just how awesome Sacramento really is, and why I will forever be glad that I grew up here. Some will say Sac is boring, but I think that's another way of saying you're a boring person. You can have fun anywhere you go if you're with the right people and in the right state of mind. And I'm not sure of, nor do I care about, the other millions of complaints people have.
I love this place.
I went to work today at Gold's Gym. Sundays are really slow days. I was the only child care attendant there for two hours. Just before 9 AM Kawai-san (I finally learned her name!), the adorable Japanese lady and her two adorable daughters came in. I explain to her (in Japanese
) why I haven't been around much. Then she goes off to do her work out.
A few minutes later, another woman comes in and I notice a distinct accent as she greets me. She tells me that her family has recently relocated to Sacramento from AUSTRALIA. I'm amazed, and eagerly welcome her to our little city.
About 30 minutes later, it struck me. Here I was, a black girl, sitting in a room with two Japanese kids and two Assuie kids. This type of diversity is what I live for. This is what I've always loved about Sacramento.
From elementary school to high school, I've always been in a very diverse environment. I had friends, enemies, crushes of every race. Everyone mingles together, interacting with each other. This has done me so much good as an adult. I've always been comfortable with people of every race.
One of the things I dislike about the Bay Area and UC Riverside is the separatist mindset. It's all well and good to celebrate your culture and your people, but there are so many pockets and circles and cities that are abundantly ONE race. And the Bay Area/UCR is okay with this, they even CELEBRATE it.
Now I can't say that Sacramento isn't like that. I think as a people we falsely believe that comfort and peace can only be found when we're around people of our own race/culture. But the extent of the separatism doesn't reach the same magnitude that it has in other place. And we sure as hell don't celebrate it.
And that's why I love Sacramento.

I live in a city that's very segregating, blue collar workers and full of meatheads. You're lucky to live in such a diverse city.Posted 07-21-2008 at 12:21 AM by tazo157
