Sometimes preventative dentistry isn't a good idea

i'm really upset today. i took echo (my 10 year old) to the vet tuesday to get his teeth cleaned since i had some extra money...he got 3 teeth extracted in texas and has always had issues with his teeth, so i figured that it was time again to do it. plus, he had some black sludge in his ear and i couldn't get it out...he's always been prone to having discharge in his ears. so, i made appts. for him and ollie...he would be tuesday and ollie would be thurs. well, the rule is no food or water after midnight, so i woke up at midnight to take up their food and water bowls. went back to sleep. i felt so bad for them...the whole next morning they kept circling the kitchen meowing, wanting food. every time i got up, they'd run to the kitchen and look at me. i was SO SAD that i couldn't feed them (can't feed ollie separately unless i closed him in another room).
so i loaded up echo in the carrier and he started flipping out. he rolled over and over like a crocodile does when you capture him. he was howling and scratching at the sides of the carrier. i got him in the car and he yowled the entire way to the vet's office. he usually never meows but he sure does when he needs to! so i get there when the vet opens at 7:30 and i ask them when the soonest i can pick him up because i had a hair appt. after work that day, so i needed to pick him up early and get him home...well, she was like, we may need to keep him overnight because of his age and the effects of anaesthesia. great. they'll add the boarding charge on top of everything else. i called twice that afternoon and they said that he was slowly coming out of it, but would need to keep him overnight for sure. fuck. so i go to pick him up after 10am (because the vet doesn't even show up til 9:30) and i thought he'd be all excited when he saw me. i missed him badly last night and ollie missed him even more. i pick him up and he's just staring straight ahead and not doing anything.
hmmm. so i take him home and he doesn't make a peep during the whole ride home. i get inside and i make a big deal about us being home and ollie and echo both meowed at each other and i thought things were good...well, i let echo out and ollie takes one sniff and starts growling and hissing at echo since he smells differently. it wasn't like a passive growl/hiss either...his ears were flat on his head and he was PISSED. echo get out of the carrier and he can't walk. he's bumping into things and looking drunk. it's been 24 hours and he's still got issues? it doesn't even appear that the vet had him out of his carrier since his surgery!
he won't eat, he won't drink and he just lays down looking listless. i finally had to put ollie away in the master bedroom with a food & water bowl because i left them alone for 5 minutes and one of them SCREAMED in pain. i don't know who attacked whom but i suspect that ollie attacked echo. so i had a lunch appt. so i had to leave them. echo went to the cat box 3 times while i was there and was having issues pooping.
all of this to get his teeth cleaned? i'll never do it again. plus, the bill was $157!!! to get my cat's teeth cleaned? are you kidding me? i've canceled ollie's appt. indefinitely. i don't know if i'll reschedule it or not. i didn't realize that it upset them this much to destroy their routine.
this morning was the first day that ollie allowed echo to get close to him without growling or hissing. echo still isn't the same. he's not the happy cat he used to be. i swear that the vet gave him too much anesthesia because he just hasn't been right since. he's improving a bit day by day, but he's not bouncing back like i thought he would. this really hasn't been a good experience for me and i've put a lot of stress on poor echo.
anyway, yeah, this has been a long blog, but it really hasn't been a good week with my babies.

poor you and kitty. try some rescue remedy next time. it is supposed to help animals remain calm during transports. i am sorry.
kitty needs to be taken care of just like you do. poor things. the anasthesia is hard on some animals. they might have given him too much because of that so called age issue. in which case, they should have maybe given him a little less. it is hard to know how the kitties are going to react. give them time.
i think you should get the other kitty checked out and the cost is not bad. be glad you do not have to get their teeth filed every other mouth.
everyone should be ok. i hope kitties will adjust again.
i am not sure, because i have never had two cats at the same time, but maybe take them at the same time next time.Posted 06-06-2008 at 08:10 AM by xqzmi

Yeah, and it's not a good service. I just figured out that they didn't even clean his ears like I asked them to. I think I'm switching vets. A-holes.Posted 06-07-2008 at 10:47 AM by LuvMyIS350

switch vets and ask around. maybe some of your friends can recommend some good ones. i would try to help you, but i do not even know your area or where to look.Posted 06-07-2008 at 08:55 PM by xqzmi

Sorry you had a hard time of it! However, I have to say... that's cheap compared to Bella's tooth cleaning! Hers was totally worth it though. Her teeth look so much better now and her breath smells better too.Posted 06-18-2008 at 04:00 AM by CuriousDiabla

Is your cat alright now? That doesn't sound normal at all for just a tooth cleaning!Posted 08-17-2008 at 07:04 PM by oistrakh
