I wish I am still in school. I dropped out of college at the beginning of this year. I have postponed tons of things. Here are 20 things I would ask someone that was born/raised in the US. But you have to read the 5 pages of the attached screenshots to understand my questions.

Here goes the 20 questions. They are arranged in sequence off the orange pin tags in the 5 pages. The book is Markus Zusak's "I Am The Messenger". This is chapter 2.

1. Q. sporting, flexing his muscle?

2. Q. longneck beer, like Corona?

3. Q. runner, no money and run?

----second screenshot------
4. Q. using "shack" to denote a house is common usage in US?

5. Q. Raskolnikov is an "alias" that the russian diplomat chose from "Crime And Punishment". But the book refers to the character of the novel or the russian diplomat in this context ?

6. Q. "reason", in this context, means righteous or moral, right? An example will be when you found 200 dollars in the ATM booth, your moral told you to turn it to the bank but the devil, in the literature sense, in you, told you to keep it. If you didn't turn it to the bank, the moral failed, and the devil helped. Right ?

7. Q. "run-of-the-mill" means chaotic? Like a mill factory scattered with tools and cutton flakes?

8. Q. "is" , shouldn't it be "was" for consistence sake in this sentence?

9. Q. Ugg boos is an Australia brand. Does "Ugg" imply "ugly"? Is the name symbolic? Or just a coincidence?

10. Q. "dump" is a hyperbole for the house as a trash dumpster here, right?

11. Q. "sun painted" means golden spots of the dog's fur, right?

----- third screenshot ------
12. Q. rid "him". Does "him" refer to the odor? If so, shouldn't it be "it"?

13. Q. "one" refers to card playing friend or strangers?

14. Q. "game enough", if not card game players, what does "game" refer to?

15. Q. Norsca is an australian brand. With so many non-US references, should a US reader sense that the story happens in Australia, maybe picture it in Sydney?

16. Q. What do you feel if I can replace it with "Viking toilet"? As good, or makes no sense?

17. Q. "slant" is most likely when the dog is yarning?

18. Q. "horizon" refers to death, right? If so, "dusk" could be better?

----- fourth screenshot -------
19. Q. "shit hand" is bad cards in his hand?

----- fifth screenshot -------
20. Q. "new" is a typo, should have been "nude", right?

You got lucky ... I was bored and needed a distraction so I answered most of your questions. Just don't expect it every time

    1. Q. sporting, flexing his muscle?
    A. In this case, the meaning is closer to “wearing” or “displaying”

    2. Q. longneck beer, like Corona?
    A. Yes, a long neck beer like a Corona.

    3. Q. runner, no money and run?
    A. Yes, pay no money and run
    ----second screenshot------
    4. Q. using "shack" to denote a house is common usage in US?
    A. Not common, “shack” is more derogatory – like a house that isn’t very nice.

    5. Q. Raskolnikov is an "alias" that the russian diplomat chose from "Crime And Punishment". But the book refers to the character of the novel or the russian diplomat in this context ?
--- can’t answer this one for you, I haven’t read Crime and Punishment

    6. Right ?
    A. Where I saw the word “reason” (I didn’t see it marked), it was referring to “explanation”.

    7. Q. "run-of-the-mill" means chaotic? Like a mill factory scattered with tools and cutton flakes?
    A. run of the mill means … normal, usual, nothing exciting or outstanding or different about it than every other town around.

    8. Q. "is" , shouldn't it be "was" for consistence sake in this sentence?
    A. “is” is correct in this instance because the concept they are referring to is current (it is everyone’s dirty little secret); however, was could have also been used because they were originally referring to the past.

    9. Q. Ugg boos is an Australia brand. Does "Ugg" imply "ugly"? Is the name symbolic? Or just a coincidence?
    A. Can’t answer, although I personally think they’re ugly.

    10. Q. "dump" is a hyperbole for the house as a trash dumpster here, right?
    A. Yes, trash dump (not just a single dumpster, but the place that the trash collectors take the trash to be dumped – landfill) would describe a very undesirable house.

    11. Q. "sun painted" means golden spots of the dog's fur, right?
    A. It is saying he sleeps by the door with the sun actually shining spots of light onto his black fur. The sun is “painting” the spots on his solid black fur.

    ----- third screenshot ------
    12. Q. rid "him". Does "him" refer to the odor? If so, shouldn't it be "it"?
    A. Him is correct here, they are saying rid the dog (him) of the odor (it). Although saying “get rid of the smell” would have seemed easier, it’s not as … “poetic”.

    13. Q. "one" refers to card playing friend or strangers?
    A. I see “one” used several times. He is saying no person except his friends who he plays cards with will come to the house. No one (in this next sentence meaning anyone other than his card-playing friends) is brave enough to enter the house – this would have been clearer if he had said “no one else”.

    14. Q. "game enough", if not card game players, what does "game" refer to?
    A. “game enough” is meaning “brave enough”. It does relate back to someone brave enough to join a game, but the slang meaning here is “brave”.

    15. Q. Norsca is an australian brand. With so many non-US references, should a US reader sense that the story happens in Australia, maybe picture it in Sydney?
    A. No idea, can’t answer without reading more of the book.

    16. Q. What do you feel if I can replace it with "Viking toilet"? As good, or makes no sense?
    A. Viking toilets probably smell pretty bad. I think they are referring to the fact that between the dog’s smell and the Norsca, that the dog in particular smelled like a toilet that had been sprayed with Norsca. I’m not sure simply saying “Viking toilet” would make the same meaning as “a deodorized Viking toilet”

    17. Q. "slant" is most likely when the dog is yarning?
    A. The dog is sleeping between the screen door and the solid “front door”. When he tries to close the front door, the dog will move into the triangular area made between the closing door and the screen door, which could be considered “slanted” in shape.

    18. Q. "horizon" refers to death, right? If so, "dusk" could be better?
    A. Dusk would be correct, but with the expressive writing being used, rather than saying the sun is setting, instead saying that the horizon is fraying is just more creative.

    ----- fourth screenshot -------
    19. Q. "shit hand" is bad cards in his hand?
    A. Yes it would mean his hand of cards is bad or shitty. However, and I can’t tell from this small reading on that page, sometimes people say that “life dealt me a shit hand”, meaning basically the same thing, but instead of the cards in their hand they mean that their life is bad.

    ----- fifth screenshot -------
    20. Q. "new" is a typo, should have been "nude", right?
    A. naked and nude are the same thing, so no, I think he was meaning “new”, the first time she would be naked in front of him.

I have not read most of your question but this I can tell you is from Dostoyevksy. The "When reason fails, the devil helps" quote comes from the frantic 'spotted by Nastasya but still goes back to grab the ax' scene.
