Why do all these polls show a neck and neck race between McCain and Obama?

OK, so I've been heavily following the Presidential race since Barack Obama announced his candidacy. Actually, I've been a big supporter and follower of Obama since his famous 2004 speech at the DNC and was so happy to see him run for the highest office in the land. I followed daily news coverage and read as much information as I could through the primary races and now that he's the Democratic presidential nominee I truly believe this country is ready to make history.
But I'm a little perplexed about all these poll numbers with a virtual neck and neck race between Obama and John McCain. How can it be this close? I'm sure come November Obama will win by a landslide if he does the right things during this historic campaign. But after 8 years of turmoil under Bush how can people in this country even consider McCain since he's basically following all of Bush's policies meaning a Bush 3rd term. After the disastrous 8 years we've suffered through how can anybody possibly want to suffer through another 4 years?
I remember the McCain of old when he was the supposed independent maverick of the Republican party and when he was receiving praise for being a more bipartisan senator. But now that he's running for President he's just another panderer for the Republican party. It's actually kind of sad to see McCain become another typical Republican pawn.
Don't get me wrong. I don't consider myself aligned with any party. I consider myself an independent. Personally, I hate that this country has a two party system. But that's a different discussion for a different day. But Barack Obama is so much more fundamentally different than our typical candidate. First of all he's not a white Caucasian (no offense). Myself being a person of color in this country I can't help but be intrinsically aligned with Obama. He's also someone that grew up with humble beginnings like most people in this country so the notion that Obama is an elitist and doesn't know the pains and struggles of the normal American is baloney. He's lived with the same struggles and hardships as many of us. He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a trust fund to rely on like Bush and McCain.
So if you're reading this and you have been following this contest then you must know that the Republicans have already been running their same old mud slinging lies about Obama. The problem with Democrats in the last two elections is that they aren't offensive enough. In 2000 Gore's Presidency was stolen from him by the Republican party and in 2004 Kerry got swift boated and did nothing about it. Kerry got his glorious military service in Vietnam tarnished and shat on by a man that was too cowardly to join him in that same war by ducking the draft and joining the National Guard.
Obama can't let this happen. I know he wants to remain positive and stick to the issues on how we can make this country better but McCain and the GOP are following the Rove-style politics of the last two elections - distract the American public from the real issues at hand with felonious slander and lies. Obama has to be offensive. Here's the simple solution and it's a real simple one. He's already been doing it but he needs to do it with a louder voice, better yet a huge megaphone so that every single voting American in this country can hear it and soak it in.
McCain = Bush
Very simple strategy I'm proposing here to the Obama campaign. Link McCain to Bush as much as possible. Every chance Obama has to linking McCain to Bush he must take that opportunity and run with it. Because if you associate McCain to the last ruinous 8 years of this current administration I can't see how Obama can lose.
Who's with me on this one? Yes we can.

First of all, those polls mean jack shit.
But secondly, the mud-slinging does work.- like how they try to portray Obama as an arrogant celebrity (lol like Arnold and Ronald Reagan weren't celebrities?), how he flip flops and has no experience.
So Obama has to mud sling right back.- and he can do it legitimately by linking McCain to Bush. On the big ticket issues (the economy, support for continuing the Iraq war, health care), McCain is almost lock step in accordance with Bush's conservative, rich-get-richer, policies. Basically, he's no longer the maverick but has totally flip flopped on major issues.
For example, McCain has reversed himself on embracing the Bush tax cuts now after deriding them initially as fiscally risky and excessively skewed to the wealthy.
Totally agree- Link Bush to McCain because their policies are basically the same.Posted 08-07-2008 at 05:12 PM by Boondocksaints

I am with you. Remember the media likes to play us for fools. I wouldn't believe anything form mainstream media. How when the majority of the country dislikes are current dictator, they could possible vote for this little weasel? He is nothing more than a carbon copy of what we have now. If the people of this country allow Mcain to get in we are royally screwed!!Posted 08-07-2008 at 05:15 PM by loraleena

Course even if the people of this land vote for Obama, the powers that be could still find a way to screw us just like in 2000. I pray that Obama is our new president!!!Posted 08-07-2008 at 05:17 PM by loraleena

its sad how even an non-issue like obama's middle name has been used to distract from his message of change.
the winds of change are blowing full force, and the status quo is feeling very uncomfortable.
hopefully we'll get it right this time around.Posted 08-07-2008 at 05:39 PM by yarkmu

Congress runs this country, not the President. Sure, he has a lot of power, but the Dems are in control of Congress now and still haven't gotten shit together.
Politics is a black hole...I don't trust any of them, and that means Obama too.
Hillary's on crack--she needs to pipe down...it's not about her anymore. She and Bill are still upset. Sigh.Posted 08-07-2008 at 05:52 PM by LuvMyIS350

Because we are not bottomed out yet,
Because we haven't learned our lessons,
Because we are like buch of sheeps,
Because we don't care,
Because we are dumb
Simply politics sucks.

Obama needs to win by a landslide like Clinton did in 92 and 96 that way 2000 doesn't happen again. If it's close I have a sinking feeling the Republicans will find a way to steal the election again. But in this moment in time Obama is the kind of leader we need the most right now. Not decrepid old crypt keeper McCain.
BTW, Yarkmu, while Congress appears to run this country it's actually all the lobbyists and big corporation that runs this country. Sad fact but hopefully Obama can change that a little once he gets sworn in.Posted 08-08-2008 at 12:36 PM by daveytrainsf
