Hapa Moms

I had a bad day today. I dropped my daughter at school and ran errands, then picked her up and ran more errands. All the while it's raining and cold. More people are out than usual I suppose because of the upcoming holiday. The traffic was bad and I was in a hurry. The pharmacy didn't have my script ready because of a problem with insurance. It was just a frustrating day. But I did have a bright spot.
Standing in line at the store, my daughter and I were waiting for our turn. An Asian mom and her hapa son were in line in front of us. She turned to see who was behind her and saw Suzanne, who is mixed too, black/white. The lady's son looked white/Asian. I think she may have been Korean, but I'm not so good at differentiating the ethnicities of the Asian people. Anyway, she saw Suzanne and me behind her, and it was like a light went off in her head. She "recognized" a hapa family, one similar to her own. She chatted with Suzanne about the boots I was buying for her, and I told her son, who was about three or four, how cute he looked in his cap. It was a nice moment.
I've had moments like this before when I see another hapa family in passing, and it doesn't matter how the kids are mixed, it's a familiar "I understand. I get you. I'm pleased to see another family like mine." kind of smile or glance we exchange with each other. It's a beautiful thing.
I am so blessed to be part of such a diverse family and to be part a group of people (mixed couples) who "Get it".

Yes, I get excited when I see another family like mine. I remember when my daughter first came out. The first thing I did was look at her beautiful eyes. I can always tell a half/half child by the eyes. They are so unique and beautiful.Posted 12-03-2008 at 08:32 PM by luvasiagal
