Bruce Lee - The Alpha and the Omega. The Greatest!
For years I've known about the heroics of Bruce Lee, the legendary movies that showcased his brilliance, but as I've grown older I have come to respect much more than that of this great man.
From a personal standpoint, Bruce Lee not only made great movies, pioneered Martial Arts into the Western World and succeeded as the first Chinese moviestar in Hollywood, he was also a passionate teacher, philosopher and a self appointed liberator of the Human Spirit who dedicated his life and his art to building bridges between all races and sending us a message that is simply - love one another, we are all the same, we are all equals.
His life's work and philosophy taught me that we can only improve on the present by looking into the past (history) and extracting only the useful and combining it with the best of today. Sometimes the best knowledge is not gained from learning but by un learning what is useless.
He still to this day from the echoes of his inspirational life, does MORE for the respect and the recognition of Asian MEN, than all the Jackie Chan's, Jet Li's and all the Hong Kong actors put together.
Before the Jackie Chan Fan's start getting up in arms, hear this - Bruce had the self respect and higher vision of HOW he wanted to be portrayed in movies, always mindful that he conveyed the SAME image of masculinity, power and desire as caucasion men did at that time in movies BUT was also confident enough to do it his own way, the Chinese way. No other Asian actor regardless of thier fame can say the same IMO.
His unwavering pride meant never compromising to studio heads by playing the 'stereotypical china man' or the 'slapstick funny china man' that forgive me - Jackie Chan built a career on. Jet Li could have done more and added to Bruce Lee's work but his lack of interest outside of movies limited this happening.
So I believe this entire site owes much to the work of this eternal legend, the single greatest teacher of life the Chinese have ever produced.
I hope to see another young talented Asian Man pick up the torch that he left burning and keep bridging and building respect and understanding between Asian Men and the rest of the world.
Rest in Peace Little Dragon...

In my family Bruce Lee is an icon. My uncle owned every movie, every poster, and had his own game of death outfit (which was too short for his lanky body). My mother also owns all the movies and a few t-shirts, and openly stated that Bruce Lee was one of the sexiest men alive (I feel like in many ways I could credit her for my admiration of Asian men). My mom explained to me that back in the 70's, Bronx (NYC) kids flocked to the theaters for some Bruce Lee. In chinese connection, when Bruce broke that "no chinese, no dogs" sign, my mom said that my uncles and almost every boy out in the audience stood up either clapping or shouting "Right On" to the screen. When Bruce died, her and her brothers cried like they lost a father.
Bruce was the epitome of masculinity, wisdom, and charm. My Mom and uncle passed that love of Bruce Lee onto me, with the knowledge that he was more than just some Chinese action hero. He stood for something great and meant a lot to people who felt disenfranchised and ignored by the mainstream. He transcended race and culture, and I honestly haven't seen another Asian actor/fighter since Bruce that has brought so much sex appeal, wisdom, style, and masculine power to the screen. I too hope to see that kind of global star power from an Asian actor again. Thank you for this blog.Posted 11-04-2009 at 10:30 PM by Vampslover
