The Apocalypse

In Dan Brown's new book The Lost Symbol, he refers to the word "Apocalypse" and how everybody thinks it means the end of the world, but the word actually means "a great revealing"
It's absolutely fascinating to me that everybody thinks(I thought it too) it means the end of the world. I mean, isn't this nuts??? How could everyone think this word means something totally different? How does this happen?

I've spent a little time thinking about how this happened, and I've concluded a couple of things.
1) Our own fear of change created the image of the word "apocalypse" as to mean the end of all that we know.
2) The expression of this fear by artists and culture perpetuated the populist definition.
