Have you ever lied or REALLY fudged the truth in your cover letter/resume/interview?
Have you ever lied or REALLY fudged the truth in your cover letter/resume/interview? Be honest!
Better yet, did you get the job? EVEN more better, has it been years, and you're still there?
Please feel free to post whatever comments you have, but I really want to read if you or someone you know, or have heard 2nd hand stories of people doing this and actually getting that job.
I was listening to an old pod cast of The Candy and Potter Radio Show (107.9 THE LINK), and a guy lied 30 years ago about having a college degree. Made 6 figures and retired in comfort. His company still doesn't know.
This one was very recently (2003 or 04): Another guy wanted to be a music teacher so desperately, but school was never his thing. He was gifted in music and didn't see the reason for spending so much money on a 4 yr. degree on something his been doing for years in his church choir. He lied on his application and resume about attending a school of music. He got the job and keep it for years. He went to school while he worked and got his teaching degree. The school never found out. This dude had only a high school education, was uncertified, and still taught public school. WOW I couldn't get an interview as a teaching assistant in the ghettoes where no one wants to go even with my degree let alone a teaching job. kudos to this dude.
There were so many stories that people were not getting caught. Many lied on their cover letters, resumes, applications, and in interviews. A marketing dude made up a totally fake company and lied about his experiences (he had no marketing experience after college), but he STILL got the job! IT people saying, "yeah, I did networking and fire wall maintance." B.S. They just said whatever the interviewer wanted to hear and just learned on the job.
Seriously, I was thinking, "Dang. Makes me wonder if I should had made up my own school and transcripts."
My employer didn't check my employment history, just my references (I checked with my past employers I listed. No one called for me). I gave the references of friends. Okay, okay, I had one brand new friend state she knew me for years (but the job required that I known nonblood related references for at least 4 years). I also had a blood cousin to be my reference as well.
At least I know the people I use will say what I need to get the job. Overall, I got the job because of references.
Also, I kinda stated I did a lot of training and supervising. It was only like once in the entire year and I just said, "Put the clothes here." to a fellow, equal leveled coworker, but it's still counts
I have a cousin that is a prime example. She lied about recieving her diaploma, and she have a great job for the past couple of years now. A dang high school drop out with a job I would love to do... With all this money spent in HRs, what the heck are these folks doing all day long?!?
Discuss, discuss!

I usually slant my cover letter to the job specifics, however, lying is another story, this can very well catch-up with you and have serious consequences. I would never out right lie about a skill set especially as if they tested me and I failed it would be so obvious. KARMA is wicked.

I'm learning to do my skill now. My supervisor seems to already know and stated last week, "dang, you need some training."
Karma is wicked, but that just means I gotta be meaner I'll take my gamble on life's dice roll.

Nah...I don't want to be hired based on what I have deceived someone into believing I can do, rather what I know I can do. That way, they know what to expect, and I most assuredly will be capable of delivering.

I can't remember what the retired dude's employment was, but it was a very prestigous business. I just want to know how in the world he was so lucky all these years. Stories like this just fascinate me. Heck, how does a state ran school NOT run an education background on their teachers? I'm being serious, it makes me wonder how many people honestly cheat the system and we never know about it.

Yeah, I have a girlfriend whose sister and one of her cousins who do it all the time. Neither had any clerical experience, but put on their resumes they did. They both ended up working some pretty good jobs. I'm a chicken when it comes to crap like this. I just don't want to set myself up and not be able to deliver on the goods. That being said, wasn't there a guy who was a fake doctor or something performing cosmetic surgery on women for years in Florida? I think he was busted when one of his patients died.

Living with my mom was driving me insane and I needed work. I was like, "screw it." Karma might bite me in the ass with me having a baby with a white dude".. . Hell, no one seems to check work history these days...That being said, wasn't there a guy who was a fake doctor or something performing cosmetic surgery on women for years in Florida? I wanna say he featured on Oprah and 20/20. Seriously, how did the medical board not know?! Doesn't the board do scheduled and random yearly or biyearly checks on doctors?
I'm going to research that and get back with you on that one. I watched that movie with Leonardo DiCaprio about that one guy that was a pilot and many other occupations. This dude did it for years. It was amazing. I think it was on A&E or Discovery about the guy's biography and how he did it.
BTW, how long did the girls stay at their jobs?

No it's bad and these days people really check your credentials and call your references even if it's overseas!
I do admit making my resume more attractive by using big words
Maintenance engineer - cleaner
Data entry - cashier
This type of thing

Never. I work in MS Access but don't know VBA or SQL. If I said that I did VBA/SQL, they would fire me the first day. I am completely lost on those parts of MS Access.
