KFR claims nuclear test success

The Kim Family Regime, otherwise known as the DPRK or north Korea, is claiming it has successfully conducted a nuclear test. If the ROK report concerning the seismic tremors in North Hamgyung Province is correct, the detonation most like occurred in Mount Mantap where the KFR has recently built tunnels 700 meters deep. Once the claims of detonation are confirmed, KFR would join India, Israel and Pakistan as the fourth country that possesses the bomb but have not ratified the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT).

Quote:
SEOUL, Oct. 9 (Yonhap) -- North Korea announced Monday that it successfully conducted an underground nuclear test.

In a report by the North's official Korean Central News Agency, the communist regime said the test earlier Monday was carried out safely and successfully.

"The nuclear test was conducted by 100 percent of our wisdom and technology," it said.

There was no danger including leaks of radioactivity, it added.

South Korea's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said the country's state intelligence agency detected a 3.58 magnitude seismic tremor in the North's remote area of North Hamgyeong Province at around 10 a.m.

"The intelligence was immediately reported to President Roh Moo-hyun," Roh's spokesman Yoon Tae-young said. "Related countries are in consulation on the issue."
Roh immediately called an emergency meeting of related ministers to discuss countermeasures.

I sincerely hope that day never comes. A full scale war with multi-national forces fighting a war and at the same time, policing humanitarian relief work is the worst possible scenerio. It'd make Iraq and Congo seem minor in comparison. Waiting out the containment game is the hard part. But as Soldier Girls said, this is some scary shit and the stakes just got much bigger. So did the $$$ that will be spent by Japan, ROK and Taiwan to counter the security threat. US now also has an excuse to rearm the south with nukes and make a statement against China if the two countries keep heading in a head on collision course.

I don't think China will be committed to protecting Kim Jongil's regime. China and Russia, however, would be fully opposed to a U.S. occupied North Korea.

Sanctions wont do shit. The government clearly is not operating on rationality here. It is more on knee jerk reactions, or some false national pride. Quite frankly, the United States don't know what to do either about North Korea. The country is like a madman suicide bomber, or a rabid dog that is cornered, no one really wants to front the cost in confronting it, but if it were left on its own, it still has a course to run before imploding. At this point, the U.S. is not able to front the resources and forces to effectively take out North Korea, China and Russia are definitely not gonna do it since NK does not pose a direct threat to them.

South Korea and Japan have little military capacity of their own, but rely on American protection. They will probably feel that America is unable to protect them properly from North Korea and start militarizing on their own.

Bush's Blunder In North Korea

Bush's Blunder In North Korea

Former U.S. National Security Advisor Donald Gregg -

First:
Don't panic. Kim Jong Il's objective is survival and eventual change in North Korea, not suicide. The diplomatic situation in Northeast Asia will be immensely complicated by the North Korea test, which I think was a huge mistake on their part, but missiles are not about to start flying.

The test may indicate the rise in influence of a hard-line faction in the KPA, which is holding sway, at least for now, over others more interested in transformational change in NK. The initiation of a strong bilateral dialogue between NK and the US would strengthen the moderates, and ease the situation in general, but that is not at all likely to happen.

Second:
Why won't the Bush administration talk bilaterally and substantively with NK, as the Brits (and eventually the US) did with Libya? Because the Bush administration sees diplomacy as something to be engaged in with another country as a reward for that country's good behavior. They seem not to see diplomacy as a tool to be used with antagonistic countries or parties, that might bring about an improvement in the behaviour of such entities, and a resolution to the issues that trouble us. Thus we do not talk to Iran, Syria, Hizballah or North Korea. We only talk to our friends -- a huge mistake.

Donald Gregg was a CIA official since 1951 and a liaison to President Carter's National Security Council and, National Security Advisor to Vice President George H.W. Bush and U.S. ambassador to South Korea from 1989 to 1993. He's now chairman of the board of the Korea Society
