I am planning a trip to Asia this Summer culminating in Beijing for the Olympics. My trip will begin on May 6 to August 13. My first stop is Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia on May 7. This will be my hub (I can travel anywhere in Asia from KL). I plan to visit Cambodi, Vietnam, Thailand and China. I have no particular order preference but would like to be in Vietnam in June and China in late July to early August. I like to finallized my iteniary by next week. Please post any trips to South East Asia during this summer that anyone here plan to make. Maybe we can meet up somewhere in the motherland.
Boycott Chinese Genocidal Olympics!!!!
*ducks and hides from RogueSpear*
I didn't want to post about China, but you people are not giving me a choice. Thanks for the warning. But I was a Chinese Studies major at Berkeley studying under Fred Wakeman, the top Chinese historian in America. I also studied under Jefferey Riegel, one of the Top Buddhist studies specialist in America, who by the way did a special on the Discover Channel. I also, studied under Orville Schell and Barry Naughton. I have had discussions with Chrisopher Hitchens, who by the way wrote a biography on the Dalai Lama. So Yeah I know a little bit about China. I was there 7 years ago, traveling all over China, from Beijing to Xian, to Yunan, to Shanghai (all four corners of China). And encounterd many Tibetans in Yunan, even befriending several of them. 7 years ago was when China announced that it got the Olympics and it was a great party. I will be going to U.C Berkeley this Fall for my MBA and MA in Asians Studies with a focus on China. Berkeley by the way has the top Asian studies program in this country. So yeah, I know a bit about China.
So don't give me advise about China. Get an education. Talk to smart people, then give me advice.
I am from Cambodia. 25% of my family was killed by Pol Pot. I was born in Vietnam right after the Vietnam war. And I was a Docent at the Northern California Holocaust Center, where graduate No. 1 in the class of 1997. So I do know about Genocide and I don't take that word lightly. AGAIN 25% of MY FAMILY WAS KILLED BY POL POT. Until you live the life I live and have dedicated the time I have to understanding CHINA and GENOCIDE, DON'T FUCKIN PUT THOSE WORDS Together.
I WILL NOT DEBATE CHINA, UNLESS the PERSON THAT I DEBATE HAVE A DEGREE IN ASIAN STUDIES FROM A REPUTABLE UNIVERSITY OR HAVE WORKED IN HIGH LEVEL POSITION IN CHINA.
AND DON'T NOBODY IN THIS SITE USE THAT WORD GENOCIDE ON ME. I CRIED TOO MANY TEARS AND SEE TOO MANY OF MY FAMILY SUFFER. I WILL BE IN CAMBODIA BECAUSE I PLAN TO START A NGO THERE IN THE FUTURE. SO FUCK OFF.
SORRY I NEVER GET THIS MAD, BUT GENOCIDE IS NOT A WORD A PERSON SHOULD THROW AROUND. AND BEFORE ANY BODY JUDGES CHINA, LOOK AT THE CRAP THE USA IS DOING.
We have no way of checking anyone's internet credentials, but, if that's true, you have my respect.
However, I made it quite clear that my comment was directed at RogueSpear.
I was the son of one of the richest man (a Chinese man) in Southern Vietnam in the early 1980s. The the Vietnamese decided to purge Vietnam of all its rich Chinese people. Especially from Mytol, a small town on the Mekong River. I was 5 at the time, when my father told me we had to sell all our belongings (two factories, two houses, 5 motor bikers, and a plot of land) for 5000 USD and become refugees to come to America. The only reason we made it out alive was one of my dad's best friend was a nice old lady who was a high ranking official in the Vietnamese Communist party. I went from a rich kid with a stable life to a poor refugee going from refugee camp to refugee camps to the slums of the Tenderloin in San Francisco in 1985. So yeah, I know about racism. I know about ETHNIC CLEANSING AND I KNOW ABOUT GENOCIDE. Not only have I studied it, but I have experienced it. I have dedicated the rest of my life to helping Vietnam and Cambodia regroup. If I have time and if China needs it, then I like to do something, no matter how small for China as well.
So please people stop it. I don't mean to be rude. I have not said one thing about the Dalai Lama and China in any of these threads. I have bitten my tongue for a while. I am here to make friends, not have debates with random people with dubious credentials. You have your views. I know no matter what I do or say or what evidence I produce, I am not going to change anyone's mind on the Dalia Lama and China. I have had conversations with many of these Dalai Lama supporters (I do live in San Francisco), not one single MOFO knew anything about the Dalai Lama, the man, the institution, and the history. I have given up.
If you want to learn more about the Dalai Lama, read Christopher Hitchen's book. If you want to learn more about China and Tibet, read Chinese history books from the Tang, Yuan, and Qing Dyansty periods. Good Authors include: Fred Wakeman, John Spence, Mote (forgot first name), and Patraica Ebrey. If you want to learn about CCP, the current Dalai Lama, the Panchem Lama, Taiwan, the USA and how all these parties are related, then read Modern Chinese history. Good author includes, Orville Schell, Carolyn Wakeman, Mixin Pei (hate this mofo, but has some good points), Fred Wakeman, and John Spence.
SWEET, Apologies to you. But I want this post to be about traveling to asia. Leave politics out of this. If anyone wants to debate Tibet and China come to Berkeley or Harvard. U of Pitt and Ohio State are nice places as well where honest intellectual discourse is taking place or course in the classrooms and seminars and not in the courtyards.
I hope you have an amazing time. If I could, I would hit the Olympics, so I am jealous. Just don't do anything I would do while you're traveling
What if Prince Charming had never shown up? Would Snow White have slept in that glass coffin forever? Or would she have eventually woken up, spit out the apple, gotten a job, a health-care package and a baby from her local neighborhood sperm bank?
G and I will be in HK and various parts of Asia for the first two weeks of June. Beginning and ending in HK, what's inbetween is up in the air. We'll prob book our tickets this weekend. We'll hit you up laters
