Kung-fu legend Bruce Lee is to be honoured with a statue in the war-torn Bosnian city of Mostar.

A statue of the action hero is intended to remind people of Lee's "loyalty, friendship, skill and justice".

The city remains ethnically split with Bosnian Muslims, Croats and Serbs divided since the 1992-95 war.

Writer Veselin Gatalo said: "Lee is a true international hero and is a hero to all ethnicities in Bosnia and that's why we picked him."

Opening ceremony

Gatalo, who came up with the idea, said they planned to erect the statue in Spanish Square, in the centre of the city.

He is an ethnic Croat and said he hopes a statue to Lee will help erase the city's image as a place of ethnic rivalries.

"We want that people, when you say Mostar, respond: 'that's the city that has a monument to Bruce Lee'," Gatalo added.

He hopes to install the statue by November this year and invite Lee's wife, Linda Lee to the opening ceremony.

The four martial arts films Lee made - Fists of Fury (1972), Enter the Dragon, The Chinese Connection and Return of the Dragon (all 1973) - ensured his place in film history.

But he died at the age of 32 from swelling on the brain, before he could witness his rise to fame in the US.

Bruce Lee has been honoured with a statue in the Bosnian city of Mostar. The Mostar Bruce was unveiled the day before a second statue was unveiled in Hong Kong.
Bruce Lee was chosen because he stood for peace and even though he was reknowned as a Martial Artist, he would always tell people that you cannot resolve your problems with your fists alone. He stands for bridging cultural gaps and the spirit of unity as he himself overcame several challenges in being and A.B.C (American.Born.Chinese)
Growing up in Hong Kong and then moving back to the United States, Bruce did not always recieve the warmest welcomes but always managed to rise above and despite race, gender and cultural differences finally earnt the respect of his peers.
Many of his fans today still believe he should be awarded a post-humous Oscar for his achievements and for introducing Martial Arts to mainstream cinema.
I have to admit I agree with them!

this is straight up awesome.

What's REALLY amazing is that of all the famous (or infamous) stars throughout the history of entertainment, they chose NOT Michael Jackson, NOT Brad Pitt, NOT Denzel Washington BUT the legendary Bruce Lee. It's amazing man! It shows that Bruce Lee's fame continues to live on despite his untimely death!

If anything, this piece of news only serves to proof that Bruce Lee was a real legend to everyone REGARDLESS of race, gender and religion. He is still a hero to many people and a unifying force!

This isn't one of those prank stories, is it? If it's not, I might just make a pilgrimage to the place. How awesome. It may be one of the few non-Buddha statues of an Asian guy outside of Asia.

No it's not!
I'm from Croatia and I've seen it with my own eyes.
BL truly is a legend for the older generations in these parts I've seen ppl name their children after him.
I think it was made arround 2005 and some hooligans attacked it. I don't know whats with it now I'll have to ask some of my relatives who live in Mostar.

i had to check the post just to see where mostar was on the map...what a strange place for a bruce lee statue i'll be sure to dress in a yellow jumpsuit when i'm visiting the balkan states
