stereotyping by "race" vs stereotyping by "culture"
hey guys
i wanted to ask everyone if they think racism includes the stereotypes of cultures
for example:
stereotyping by "race" or "racism" is making assumptions towards a person based on the classifcation they were born under (genetic)...such as "blacks are inferior to whites in terms of intelligence" or "asians have small p's"
stereotyping by "culture" revolves more around making assumptions based on the environment a person was born into, but independent of who they are genetically, meaning those characteristics are created by personal choice/experience generally resulting from the social norms around them...an example would be assuming a chinese person in china eats rice everyday or a young black american you meet in a big city likes hip hop
it's like the difference of "nature vs nurture"
would you guys say the latter is more acceptable on the p.c. scale? given "culture" is not scientifically something ingrained into someone and is theoretically something they can change about themselves at any point in their lives
Well there is nothing wrong with stereotypes. Stereotypes represent physical aspect of human nature. whether certain stereotypes are true or not, the problem is people negatively associate them with the inner character of people. Because I eat rice, so what, as long as you don't judge my character or personality with it, it's fine.
both can create problems lol, because culture plays its part too, in the uk it would be the north south divide, uk europe divide, english scottish divide,
stereotypes are abundent, but personally as long as no one means me ill i dont let it worry me
I try very hard NOT to stereotype at all, whether it's racial or cultural. Or more accurately, I postpone prejudging someone based soley on what they look like or what I know about their heritage.
I let them talk and take action, before I form an opinion. If possible I'll usually try to gather more information that may give me a better idea of what I observed so I don't go forming conclusions based on limited info.
In short ... even though we may be conditioned to prejudge based on ethnic, racial, or social stereotypes we learn or hear about ... I try very hard not to let it all effect how I view people.
I'm not going to think you're an asshole until you prove it to me.
