We don't know to what extent the regime is stalling, and I would advise people to be suspicious of what they read in the news because it is probably "doctored" in some way.
An intelligence estimate from someone who's actually had dealings with the junta and who isn't going to gain anything from revealing his perspective is probably going to be more helpful than what the mainstream media is writing.
All moves should be made according to reliable information.
A last resort would be to actually just GIVE the supplies to the junta and trust them to make sure it reaches where it does, to have a chance of saving a few people instead of having all of them die, since time is of the essence. But that should be a wild card and the junta should not imagine that we would be willing to do so.
The delivery of aid into Myanmar but its failure to be distributed could actually even inflame a coup, if the Mizzima editorial I read is correct.
It's true that, in any such nation, the wheels run much slower on things like visas, but the word from the top is,,,,the junta is blocking visas for us.
Details on delivery of life sparing bottled water and rice is sketchy, some drops were made,,and the junta delivered some and held onto some.
Healthcare workers from the afore mentioned groups are ready to go in at a moment's notice with Zinc for roofs/shelter, water, rice, and medicine, but no word yet.
In their recent history, Myanmar has not experienced this level of catastrophe.
While I can understand their reticence,,I also know the numbers when this thing starts to turn sour.
Hope they make a positive move soon.

I'm guessing that unlike during the mega-earthquake in China during the 70s, when the politburo there also suppressed the news and refused aid out of fear of foreign invasion (which was a very real threat), the junta did not send in the army for the initial relief work like the Chinese did because they immediately knew they were in no position to help and were in fact impotent.
Putting soldiers in that sort of situation is highly dangerous and undermines the legitimacy and very basis of rulership, and it creates incredible psychological stresses in witnesses, what more witnesses who are a part of your army. The threat of revolt is very real.
this thread has gone all over the map. first there are those (no names) trying to influence people to donate, and now it is not a good thing to do. adriana, i hope you can take control of this thread again as an information basis on what you had planned it to be. we can start a whole new thread about the politics.

Your perception is truly warped.
In which post did someone try to "influence people to donate"?
In which post did it not become a good idea?
If you can't support your allegations with evidence, then in some places it is called "talking out of your arse".
The focus of the media isn't on the Burmese victims, the focus has been shifted to the junta, and now the focus is being shifted on "China".
The junta is being blamed for not allowing aid to flow in unhindered. And China is being blamed for not "doing more" to stop "human rights abuses" in Burma.
I don't disagree that the Burmese are being fucked over, but what are the roots of the junta's actions? What are the origins of their thoughts and pre-occupations?
Until ordinary people actually make an effort to discover and understand, they resign themselves to being mindless sheep led around and taught what to think like Boinker put it - in Pavlovian response.
Unlike popular opinion, I don't believe that the solution lies in China. One look at the MAP and Myanmar's borders leads me to suspect that the answer lies in THAILAND.
What happened in Burma during the heights of the Cold War? What happened there that isn't being said or written about today?
