Saw this movie today, and did not realize there was an Asian character in the movie. Even though he didn't have much screen time, he did have a notable part as one of the minor "mobsters", I have never seen this actor before, nonetheless i thought he did a fair job.
I saw The Dark Knight yesterday and it's one of the best, if not perhaps the best, superhero movie ever made.
All the performances were great, but Heath Ledger was downright brilliant as the Joker. Methodical and menacing, Ledger's version of The Joker will haunt you in your nightmares. He's scarier than the likes of Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. This Joker will make Hannibal Lecter cringe in his jail cell.
Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker will probably go down as one of the greatest performances in cinema. This is the stuff legends are made of.
The other strong performance in this movie is Aaron Eckhart as Harvent Dent. Watching his dark side take over was absolutely captivating. Although Eckhart was overshadowed by Heath Ledger (Ledger was just too good as the Joker), he created a terrific persona of a fallen angel.
There was a Chinese villian in this movie. Yeah, he was a bit too stereotypical for my tastes though. Essentially, he was a corrupt Hong Kong businessman colluding with the Joker and other Gotham City mobsters. But the actor who played Lau (the corrupt businessman) did a decent job. He was very calculating, intelligent, and arrogant. He was also seen as a brilliant genius (in comparison to the other stereotypical bad guys such as the Italian mobsters and Black gangstas who were portrayed as oafs and ogres respectively).
The Dark Knight also shows a brief glimpse of Hong Kong and the gorgeous skyscrapers that dominate the city. This film makes Hong kong look absolutely rich, as if it were the financial capital of the world.
I thought the movie was awesome! I saw it the evening it came out on IMAX and I really want to go see it again... It never bored me at all, it was nice to see Asians in the film (even if playing a bit role, I think the film definitely implied that the Lau character was a lot more savvy than the other criminals) and yeah, Heath Ledger's Joker was amazing. I never thought much of Heath Ledger, but seeing this movie made me genuinely sad for his passing.
"Usually when people are sad, they don't do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change."
So glad some of you have seen it and thanks for the review. My son and I are planning to this weekend or sometime this week. I have always thought Heath was an amazing actor and have been looking forward to this performance since his death
depending on the crowds, I'll probably see it sometime next week. Maggie Gyllenhaal hasn't been too well received by critics or fans, here's what one guy said on AVS:
Maggie Gyllenhaal, was terrible... For playing such a pivotal part in the plot, she was a poor choice as a replacement for Kate Holmes. I hated her as Rachel Dawes and I really don't know what Wayne or Dent saw in her pigass face.
Satisfied? You know, I really hope so because God knows you need some satisfaction in life besides shagging Captain Cardboard and I never really liked you anyway and... and you have stupid hair. Spike
I look forward to seeing this. Though I'm not a huge superhero fan (other than the original Batman series from the 60s--ZOWIE!), I'm going to see it for Heath's portrayal of The Joker. I'm glad the hype is worth it. I won't probably see it for another week or so, but I'll get there eventually.

LOL, now that's a bit harsh lol! I kind of agree that she isn't exactly good looking, her performance was not on par with Katie holmes, and she was not convincing at her 'pivotal part in the plot'. I think she was never really convincing in the entire movie. Having said that, in my opinion i wouldn't say her acting was bad, the fact that her co-stars really outshined her in this one just didn't help her one bit. I believe she's a good actress in a wrong role.
Katie Holmes was simply dreadful as Rachel Dawes in Batman Begins. Rumor has it that she was so terrible the producers asked her not to come back for The Dark Knight.
While Maggie Gyllenhaal isn't the prettiest face, she's still decent looking (though she has that very tired look to her) and she did a good job as Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight. i thought she was a lot more believable as Rachel Dawes. I work with attorneys all the time, and frankly, in real life, most attorneys look like Maggie Gyllenhaal and not Katie Holmes...
The Dark Knight is a phenomenal film nonetheless. Both Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart were outstanding, but this movie belongs to Heath Ledger.
