YAY! Another korean overachiever.

It's like we expect every East Asian to be an overachieving Ivy League educated doctor. if you don't overachieve, you're a disappointment.

And you wonder why people Koreans and East Asians have some of the highest rates of depression and suicide attempts.

We always love to praise the overachieving East Asians, but we always marginalize or even ostracize those who don't live up to the expectations of being a model minority.

You are completely correct, and yet we have idiots here who claim that Asians have it so good. The whole problem with the model minority myth is that it is a myth. They take the few exceptions who are successful and tout them as the norm claiming that every Asian American has it made while completely ignoring those who don't. As well, the success of Asian Americans is not due to institutional favor, but occurs despite it.

Yeah ... reading my previous post, I realize I came across as a bit bitter towards the likes of Arnold Kim. Honestly, good for him and I congratulate him on his successes.

It just kinda irks me that everybody thinks East Asians are supposed to be super geniuses who are good at math and are wealthy by the age of 30. It's ridiculous that every East Asian is expected to be like Jerry Yang, etc.

I guess you could say it's like blacks and sports/music/entertainment. For every one black person who makes it in the music industry, there are several who fail. But people assume that if you're black, you're supposed to be good in sports and/or talented in music.

Likewise for East Asians, for every one model minority success story, there are thousands who are struggling to live up to that hype. And constantly being reminded that you're supposed to be the "model minority" and people questioning why you're not living up to the East Asians who are Ivy League educated doctors doesn't do much to help one's self-esteem.

but alas, I'm just ranting...

What I find amazing is that there are enough people who are interested in future Mac products, including just rumors, that this guy can make 6 figures out of his blog.


The Jews don't seem to have a problem w/ that - and they kick our arse when it comes to overachievement (not that I would consider being a doctor or going to an Ivy "overachieving").

I think the difference with Jews is that there is no family and social pressure to excel, and to do so in a rather narrowly-defined manner within particular fields of profession (e.g. medicine, engineering, and etc.). Certainly, Jews are widely considered to be highly intelligent but, in spite of this, they as a people have been sufficiently imbued with Western liberal philosophies on life to be able to pursue whatever they want in life, free from the emotional shackles imposed by tradition and cultural expectations.
