I was watching the Olympics last weekend with my [Chinese] bf and he called his dad for his 80th birthday. He asked if his dad was watching and I guess his dad said yes. They discussed some of their favorite moments so far and before my bf hung up, he said to his father, "have fun watching the Olympics and root for the United States!!" I guess I was sorta surprised by that comment. Even though he and his parents grew up in the US, I expected that they would root for the Chinese teams instead.
I found that interesting, that he identifies more with the land of his birth rather than the motherland, especially since the whole event is happening in China, which I thought would awaken those nationalistic emotions. I don't know why I am surprised, especially when I think of my own German heritage, because I root for the USA since I've lived here all my life, not the Germans (sorry LF!). I don't know why I assumed he would be any different; feeling slightly retarded here.
So it made me want to ask the question of who you root for at the Olympics. For those of you who are recent transplants (like you Nordic) to another country, do you root for your new home or do you root for the mother ship?
