Asian Men Can't Dress!

i've heard this said a few times by women about Asian guys. they complain that a lot of Asian guys look like they raid The Gap every weekend with the standard khakis and polo shirt, maybe a t-shirt, but generally lack any sense of fashion style. and to a large degree i think they're right. many of the Asian guys i know shop to put clothes on their back so they can disappear in the crowd, which isn't surprising since Asian folks generally don't like attention.

but this doesn't take away from the fact that chicks like a man who dresses well. as that old adage goes, "the clothes make the man", and i think there's some truth in this statement.

so what do you fellas think looks good? let's discuss this in detail and share some of our tastes in clothing. visual examples would be great!

me, i think this dude below is wearing a cool outfit, sans the messenger bag. ugh.

I like that outfit. You're right though, the 100+ year-old murse needs to go and that scarf he has too. Maybe some better shoes....it would look great.

Agree, I do.
Realize they don't that meekness their dress accentuates. With your clothes, daring you must be. Clothes, must perceptions complicate. Women, figure you out must not.

(did that sound like Yoda? I really tried).

In plain english:

OK, too many asian guys strive for the Abercrombie/J-Crew look, only to come off looking like tech dorks (hey, I'm a bit of a tech dork, but the key is to not look like one). The reason why the Abercrombie/J-Crew look works for white guys is because women will see a good looking white guy and think he is a player. But if he is dressed like a goodie-two shoes, it counteracts that player vibe a bit (replacing it with a "he's a good country boy" vibe) and it melts their wee hearts. When women see an asian fellow, they'll think he is a goodie-two shoes. If he goes for the pastel polos and khaki pants, it only amplifies that. So, unless you want to stay in the friend zone forever, you need to stop shopping at The Gap.

For an asian guy, you need to dress like a rockstar, even if you're not, to demolish that urge women get to pat your head and pinch your cheeks.

Abridged version:

white guys have to tone down their sex appeal. Asian guys need to amp it up.

yeah totally agree with you.... but then i think since we are on generalisations, asian dress code is just different from the European/white girl taste... like the same thing that will work for the white guys it just doesn't work for asian because the features of asian guy is just different.... and that's why i think a lof of ppl find mixed blood more attractive...

but not necessary more sex appeal for asian guy but rather find your own style and be more comfortable with your style... the trend in asia's advertising is to be more "westernised" but i think it's more about looking slightly more tougher physically and not so civilised and reserved is the main key for asian but then most asian guys just don't have enough guts to be out there... that's what i find in my own corner of reality... so yeah maybe biased but this is what i think

anyone care to enlighten me?

I think the attitude towards fashion among some men somewhat lacks respect, since it's such a "superficial" matter. Perhaps some of them believe in "it's the inside that counts", I used to be one of them. Here is the twist though, vision, is one of our major senses. We look with our eyes to see where we are going, we look at people when we converse, we look at beautiful people. So why shouldn't one take care how he is presented to the world and the people around him? "Dress like everyday is important" is the one sentence I quote out of a pretty famous book. Dressing like the day is important allows you to feel like you are going somewhere important, with it, a sense of purpose. You actually FEEL good about yourself, your confidence goes up etc.

Sorry perhaps I got a little off topic. As for what outfit looks good. It really depends on your personality, and your body type. Face it, not everyone is a 180+ runway model. Dress to fit your body.

suit jackets with defined cuts looks great on anyone. single breasted, not too big.

Jeans, loads of different styles, dark to light washes, details! go for the ones with nice details as they make your jeans stand out from the rest( oh and trust me, the girls can and will notice them)

pants, depends on what kinda shirt you are wearing..

shirts, again, lots and lots of styles, but go for the ones with a cut.

t-shirt, whatever that says about your personality.

Shoes. IMO, every guy should have at least 3 pairs of nice dress shoes. Rotate them, wearing the same pair of shoes is 1. going to ruin the shoes faster. 2. Girls will notice that you dress nice.. but always wear the same pair of shoes. and.. sneakers, personal taste I suppose.

I actually don't care for that outfit Risky put up...

Besides one can spend all they money they want and some ridiculously crazy amount of money on hair cuts... but if you can't carry yourself, it's all wasted...

That's WOOOOOOOOOOOO Damn it!

That outfit you put up is really cool, Risky!! I love it!!

Now, Thak pretty much dresses really simple when he's not in uniform. (Come to think of it, being in uniform is dressing simple, too, so I guess he always dresses simple! LOL) I've never much minded. For me, as long as he's not wearing tight-rolled, acid washed jeans from the 80's, or a tie-dyed wife beater, or something else completely heinous, then it's all good. I've never minded Thak's "jeans and t-shirts" wardrobe. If I knew anything at all about men's clothes, I might try to spice it up a little bit, but considering that I don't, well, things will stay how they are at least for the moment. While I like things like what Risky posted in general, I just don't know if I could ever see Thak in something like that. I've known him the way he is for too long to be able to picture him otherwise. Now if HE wanted to change things up a bit, well, more power to him!

He's worth it.

i think you're absolutely right, whizper. it's a matter of knowing what one can get away with and what one can't. just because a piece of clothing looks good, it doesn't mean it's going to look good on ME.

the problem these days is that fellas fall for whatever is trendy. i went to Teh Standard lounge a few weeks ago and every other guy had a ragged t-shirt with screenprinted viney logos all over one side, and of course jeans. this is what the trend is right now and honestly, it's dying and it doesn't work on everyone.

it's all about finding your own look and what works for you.
