Recently, I've decided to upgrade my current laptop that is about 1 1/2 years of ownership, to something newer and having the latest graphic card, processor and the integrated webcam as well, i'm not sure if this choice is justified for USD996

how does the intel core 2 duo t5550 fare with the t7250 model? only difference tht were both being 1.83ghz and the latter being t7250. any techies here to help out? didn't opted for windows vista, since a lot of gamers seem to claim incompatibility and slow down problems. so i hope my choice was right and i hope this is a good buy?
ehh...you could have used a coupon code. plus dell is going to start selling at B&M stores pretty soon...so you'll be able to discount even more. I always have a few coupons for best buy. Sometimes you can find laptops for a "steal" on slickdeals or fat wallet.
I got my Dell off eBay, through PayPal for less than lowest cost anywhere else.
It wasn't last year's model. It came sealed in the original box, with a full three year warranty, and all the bells and whistles.
I paid PayPal with credit/debit card for extra protection, so I have instant recourse if anything goes wrong.

Get an Apple notebook, I use my desktop PC when i am not lying in bed or in school, besides that my Apple has served me well, i really like their operating system, very smart and beautifully designed piece of techology.
Laptops are hit or miss. They aren't built to last. Toshiba's and Gateways are known to be made of poor quality.
I did the same like philthyanimal. Bought a dell online brand new in box for like $400. It lasted a mere 2 years. The powersupply connection busted. The same happened to my friend. We both ended up getting a new laptop. He bought an acer and I went HP. I'm no longer a supporter for dell laptops. I think Dell continues to cut costs using cheaper parts. Cutting corners.
I'm now a fan of HP. Their products are geared towards business, where as their Compaq line is geared towards consumer. Sony VAIO line is also great. Simply strip out unnecessary software and you're good to go.
I've heard that IBM/(Lenonvo?) is considered really good quality if not one of the best.
There is of course Alienware, etc... But who's willing to fork out that kind of cash?
Vista sucks. XP lasted for 8+ years. M$ is already thinking of replacing Vista with Windows 7 soon. Vista is like Microsoft ME. Just to make it look like Microsoft has a new great product. But in reality it's crap.

ya...i like buying low cost computers and laptops and just buying a new one every 2-3 years. i've kinda stockpiled a bunch of crap now...its kinda cool having my own network. i don't really understand the purpose of spending massive amounts of money on a gaming laptop, bc you can never compete with a desktop.
toshibas are cheap...but to me they are sort of like the "honda" of laptops. good entry level...and they have a pretty damn good screen compared to others in the same price range.
gateway and emachines are one in the same as well...not great computers, but if u want a simple web surfer...they may do the trick for the avg american. for awhile i used to get the emachines every year during black friday...they arent performance computers but they are worth the money i've paid for em. my first emachines that i bought 5 or 6 years ago is still running strong.

i've also heard of a lot of people who have had similar experiences with dells like you. dells aren't as great of computers as they once were...and they brought down alienware with them. kinda like how Mercedez went downhill when chrystler (is it them?) that took over. they are built with cheap components these days...i think their main advantage is that people can customize them.

I personally have no qualms with toshiba or gateway. I never owned one. But a lot of my fellow IT co-workers have and I've heard nothing but problems.
Perhaps I should buy e-machines. My friend also owns one as a laptop (3+ years old), and it's still running strong!
If you're not into buying expensive laptops, it's cool. I'm the same way. That's why I did the same as you (eBay). As you know I got burned by Dell, so I'm gonna mix it up and buy high end. Just to see if there's a big difference in quality. If it doesn't matter, then I'll go back to being cheap.
