I was thinking this morning about my impact on the world around me. Ive read about people who want to make a big splash complete with huge memorials erected in their memory..and ive read about those who dont want to leave so much as a foot print on the earth.
..So how green are you? how much does your lifestyle effect your little world around you? Maybe all of us cant change the world, but we certainly can change our little corner of it. Pick up litter on your street? plant some flowers to beautify your environment? turn off your lights? recycling your condom wrappers? LOL
Its not easy being green - kermit the frog
It can be inconvenient, take a little more effort, but it may leave a better world for the next generation.
For my self, my greenness....i have a garden and grow quite a bit of food, I raise chickens and turkeys, grapes, and give away my excess black dirt to others who need it to start a lawn or garden.
I TRY to remember to turn off the lights, I dont have air conditioning, I have screen windows and i use wood burning heat in the office..the ONE thing i am proud of, is , we went out and plugged up the culverts that had been put in to create more farm land a century ago and where the beaver dams used to be, plugging the culverts, brought it back to the way it used to be, creating a big wet land, already with nesting geese and ducks.
My UN greenness....prolly have to many vehicles..but need them for work. I could and should ride my bike more.
I dont turn off my computer every time, I tend to leave it run, giving myself the excuse that its harder on it to start and stop all the time LOL
I refuse to turn off my aquarium lights.. I think i could have a more eco friendly fridge, washer and dryer etc..sometimes have had to resort to chemical fertilizer on the hay, which i hate. have sprayed for weeds and pests...ugh, hate that too.
I think i could have better insulation, to save on fossil fuel heat.
Im sure i will think of more,
I ride my bicycle to work at least twice a week, use re-usable shopping bags, try to eat minimum amount of meat, try not to buy stuff I don't need, and very frugal about electricity. These are all pretty simple measures and I don't think I'm causing any inconvenience to my life, but my footprints, carbon or otherwise, is far below average.
And yeah I like motorcycles, that's actually pretty un-green. Carbon emission isn't bad but the catalytic converters in bikes aren't as efficient as cars. Then again I try to inhale my own exhaust as much as possible.
OK that was joke.
"I am not ready to announce yet — even though it's clear that the voters are desperate for a white, male, middle-aged, Jesus-trumpeting alternative." - Stephen Colbert Announcing HuiNeng's Run for da House.
- I ride my bike to go litteraly everywhere from April to mid-November (unless it has gotten too cold)
- I have re-usable shopping bags
- I do not buy produce that is overly wrapped
- I jar a lot of seasonnal produce
- I make my bread (no plastic bag to throw away)
- If I can make it instead of buying it, I will make an effort to make it
- I try to live by the 3 R's motto of green "recycle, re-use, reduce"
- I wash my clothes in cold water and hang them to dry - I do have a dryer but for bed sheets and emergencies in the winter
- I clean my house with vinegar, baking soda and green products
- I make my own bath toiletries
- I try to buy organic and fair trade as much as my small means allow me
- I do not overheat my house in the winter
- I do not flush when it is just a little #1 - I live alone, so it bothers no one
- I only buy "Cascade" toilet paper - made of recycled paper with less water and less energy than other brands
- I try bring my coffee in a thermos as often as possible to work, that way I do not have to throw away a paper cup from the coffee shop...
It's the little things really...
Not so green:
- I love to buy books - LOTS of 'em
- I have an air conditionning unit for the summer - I cannot stand the heat, it makes me ill
- when I cannot ride my bike (like maybe once a month), I looooove to take a cab
- I do not compost - kinda difficult in the city
EVERYTHING begins with a good de-pantsing! Sunny, June 20th '08
I wouldn't trust you to run a bath, let alone a fucking restaurant!!Gordon Ramsay, Kitchen Nightmares
I confess i am a book addict as well, and I swear I have saved every magazine ive subscribed to since i was a kid..i literally have 2 double closets, filled with books of every sort, and magazines from ranger rick, audubon memberships, international wildlife, and AQHA, morgan horse, APHA..ugh
ive tried several times to bundle and sell them, have even had offers from people that would like to buy them from me, and somehow, I just cant seem to do it.
