when and where the hell did "ching chong" come into play?
how does it still get passed on to children of every new generation?
i sort of know that answer, but, i get so frustrated it is hard to accept the reasons.
I mean, honestly, lack of ability to write decent lyrics? This song would have been great otherwise - but there's certainly next to no flack from the Asian community towards this band's song.
Probably the same reason why anti-miscegenation laws were passed during the 1700's in the US that prohibited asian men from marrying white women . Xenophobia and fear of foreigners.
I've had 'ching chong' announced to my face and behind my back - and haven't had any problems either brushing it off, or standing up to it. That's seemed to work better for me than resorting to complaining or violence.

I think it's due in part to parents not teaching their kids that these things are not okay. I know that kids learn all sorts of things on the playground but it's up to the parents to root out the bad stuff at the end of the day. We always ask our daughter what she does at school especially during recess/lunch and if anyone was mean to her and conversely, if she was mean to anyone, none of which are acceptable.
Practice tolerance, for there may come a day when your beliefs will no longer be tolerated.
when i told a friend i got married, he asked me if i married "that ching chong guy". i really didn't expect that, even from a southerner (he lives in tennessee)! if he couldn't remember his name, he could have just asked, right? is that so hard?
i guess the (ignorant) idea is that asian names, asian words, are just interchangeable, in other words, gibberish, part of a language or culture he will never know or learn, so why bother. i'm not sure if he knew he was being offensive. i corrected him, but haven't spoken much to him since.
Interestingly, there is a wikipedia entry for it here
It seems it started during the 19th century when western countries used asians as manual laborers (coolies). Intolerance and mockery will always be part of the "intelligent" homo sapiens, so I would bet that if asians laborers were used say B.C., the term would have existed since then , having "XINΓ XΘNΓ" carved on a slab in a greek temple.
I, having studied in a non-asian catholic school, heard it since the age of 6 and all sort of insults too. I definetly think that kids can be the most innocents beings, but also the cruelest.
I guess that by now everybody remembers Rosie O'Donell using those words so I'm not going to post that. I enjoyed Beau Sia's response to that here though:
