Okay, here's the deal...you have been given a million bucks to work on behalf of a charity or a helpful organization. You can't spend it on yourself...you have to help someone or something else. What charity or organization do you donate the money to and work with to make the world a better place?
I admire Bill Gates and his wife for donating their time and money to help those in Africa who are suffering and need help. If I had a million bucks, I would donate it to the ASPCA and my local animal shelter. Animals have been such a wonderful part of my life and I wish I could help them all.
I cry every time I see this commercial. I cannot watch this all the way through...
i find philanthropy much more difficult than having a successful business. it's very hard to measure results and it's very prone to theft and corruption because you are just giving away money. the bill and melinda gates foundation seems very capable of handling the job though. i think rupert murdoch already gave most of his net worth to that foundation. perhaps being a patron would be easier on a smaller more personalized scale than philanthropy. i'd love to be a patron to scientists, engineers, and artists. bono, although i don't listen to his music, campaigns for the elimination of third world debt which i am in huge support of.
I'm a huge believer in taking care of the animals as well as abused women, etc... but there are SO many charities for it that it probably would be interesting to do something new like "Sterilize the Morons" ... or buy an island and only put stupid people on it. You know - the ones that shouldn't procreate.
The only problem with that idea is the stupid people would procreate and there would be a ton of stupid people on the island...
So I'm back to taking care of the animals.

This aint really easy to answer. And i just HATE having to use my brain right now.
Off the top though, id probably help the O.A.P's of this world. There just isnt enough done for them.
And what most forget is, that not only will we be old ourselves one day... But without these people, we wouldnt be here at all.
There are so many worthy causes to give to and so many I am passionate about, so it is sort of hard for me to choose one. I think I'd split up my funds between groups dedicated to raising the quality of life for American Indians and causes helping formerly incarcerated individuals get a new start on life and get re-integrated into society. In fact, once I start making money I'm going to start giving to causes such as these and others. Alternately, I did a lot of research in school on indigenous groups in Russia (Meskhetian Turks) and China (Uighur), many of whom have fled to the U.S. because of ethnic and religious discrimination. Perhaps I'd start my own foundation.
One thing I really like about philanthropy now is how easy it is becoming. Websites like Kiva make doing things like micro-lending really simple and you can do it anonymous if you choose as well. If and when I ever get married, I'm not going to choose to receive wedding gifts and instead register here: Changing The Present or a comparable website.
Great post by the way.
