I guess a lot of you have seen the Last Lecture by Randy Pausch about him choosing to talk about what he had as childhood dreams as he approached his own end. It made me think of what dreams I had as a child of what I wanted to do and be.

I had a great science teacher in junior high that inspired me to want to be a teacher. I always love to see the light go on when someone grasps a concept or when they can pass on their knowledge to someone else. Not quite a teacher but teaching is a part of what I do.

I wanted to be a pioneering adventurer and explorer, crossing oceans and climbing mountains. I've traveled a lot of the US and some overseas but hope to add more to my list.

I wanted to be a world famous race car driver, formula one. Well, I have a drivers license and can ride a bike....well with trainers. I recently drove a dragster and would like to race touring cars someday.

I was wondering what you had as childhood dreams and were you able to accomplish them? Is there anything stopping you?

I wanted to be the next Marie Curie and no, I am not going to accomplish it.

As a youngster I wanted to be the first Asian NBA player for Boston Celtics but I stop growing at age 13

In high school my art teacher wanted me to pursue to become a painter but I didn't want to be called a loser

I studied to become a top designer but from lack of talent I wasn't making enough money to be satisfied

My childhood dreams had been long gone but my aspiration and wanting to be the best still exist in my heart

I wanted to be a super hero. But I was never bitten by a radio active spider, didn't come from another planet and have a reaction to the sun, and my mutant powers never took.



Then I wanted to become a lawyer and that is currently why I'm in DC and why I'm still in school!

I was a very ambitous child

I always tell the story about how I dressed up as a "mommy" in 2nd grade for career day. For as long as I can remember, probably since I was 4, I've always wanted to be a mommy and have kids!! Not that it's my only ambition, but it was certainly my first dream. I'm not there yet but I'm still young!!!

From kindergarten on, I always wanted to be a teacher. I never waivered in that either, even when my former art teacher mom kept telling me "Whatever you do, don't become a teacher. It's a thankless profession." I don't have to be thanked in words though to know that what I do makes an impact. For some bizarre reason, teenagers trust me and they come to me and tell me everything I never wanted to know about their lives. But it makes me happy to know that they trust me enough to come to me for advice. I guess I never anticipated how many different hats I would have to wear as a high school teacher, but I definitely made the right choice in professions and glad that I always held onto that dream.

I also always wanted to live in Spain, which I did in college and I wanted to travel extensively there, which I have managed to do.

And as a child who spent every summer on the beach in Cape Cod, MA, my dreams for a wedding never included a fancy church or a priest in a stuffy collar (much to the chagrin of my ultra-Catholic parents). As a child I always dreamed of getting married next to the ocean, and now we have done that. I would say that I have been pretty good about seeing the dreams that really mattered the most to fruition. Not sure what is next...

My childhood dreams are to become a martial artist and to be an artist (drawing, painting). So far i've only accomplished one.

Nice! Many young female scientists have that goal.

As for me, I wanted to be the first asian male to go sub 10-seconds in the 100 m dash (Koji Ito has the asian record at 10.0). Unfortunately, these dreams were shattered when I topped out at 11.2 s.
