Korean phrase
There is a Korean restaurant we like to go to, and the waitress doesn't speak English very well. How do I say in Korean "may I have vegetables instead of rice, please?"

First of all what do you mean by "just vegetables?" They are supposed to give you side dishes that contain vegetables.
You could just put the rice aside and just eat the vegetables. Cause we dont usually eat just the vegetables, there always has to be rice.

I am low-carbing now, and can't eat rice. That is why I want to have vegetables instead of rice Side dishes may not be enough vegetables, and since I am not eating rice now, I want to have vegetables or a salad instead of the rice bowl. And then side dishes too, of course.
I know that East Asians eat rice all the time, but I try to avoid white rice now... It is mostly carbs anyway.

I think rice is considered a free item while vegetables are generally not. So it's not likely they'll let you substitute it for something else -- you can just refuse it if you don't want to waste food. You can ask for more banchan (those small side dishes that are included with every meal) if you want to load up on kimchi or something though.

That's funny. Usually I am given more vegetables in restaurants when I ask, instead of rice...
But anyways, I wouldn't mind paying an extra dollar to get more healthy food...

I think that's a neat cultural quirk. I understand going to a western restaurant and saying "can I have more green beans instead of the rice with my sustainably-raised wild salmon," but it doesn't work in Asian restaurants. It's almost like rice is the free water instead of a dish and you can't have more veggies because you don't drink water.
...well unless you're in Montreal during crab season and there's some incredible sale on crab for $5 each at a Chinese restaurant.... then they'll charge per bowl of rice. *grrr*

hey, so what does it mean when someone describes you as "ching ja sa ga chae?" not sure that's how it's spelled/pronounced but it sounds something like that.
